Buffy the Vampire Slayer Spinoff Angel Is Quietly Taking Over PVOD Charts

This show is more than just a TV series – it’s become a major part of our culture. The fantasy series really changed television, inspiring many other shows with its powerful and well-developed female protagonist.

Although many people adore and rewatch Buffy the Vampire Slayer, some fans have missed out on its excellent spinoff series. Angel premiered in 1999 alongside Buffy‘s fourth season and ran for five seasons before being canceled. Now, 21 years after it ended, Angel is finally gaining recognition thanks to being available on demand, according to FlixPatrol.

The new show Angel recently became available to rent or buy on Apple TV in Canada and the U.S. It quickly climbed the charts, reaching the top 10 in the U.S. where it landed at number four, and number three in Canada. It was only surpassed by Monk and House.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was known for blending comedy with thrilling and scary moments. The main character, Buffy, was portrayed as intelligent, strong, yet still relatable with a playful, feminine side. However, the show’s tone and setting changed as the story moved from the small town of Sunnydale to the larger city of Los Angeles.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer began as a teen show, following Buffy as she navigated high school while fulfilling her destiny as the Chosen One. Its spin-off, Angel, centered on a character first seen as Buffy’s love interest. Angel was older and wiser, a vampire determined to use his powers for good by running a detective agency and helping those in need.

Besides starring David Boreanaz as Angel, the show also featured familiar faces from the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, including Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia Chase and Alexis Denisof as Wesley Wyndam-Pryce. They were joined by new characters Charles Gunn, played by J. August Richards, and Amy Acker as Winifred “Fred” Burkle. In the fifth and final season, which followed the end of Buffy, Spike, portrayed by James Marsters, surprisingly became part of the team, even though he appeared to have died in the Buffy finale.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Is Getting a Revival

There’s been talk of continuing the Buffy the Vampire Slayer story for a long time, but star Sarah Michelle Gellar consistently said she didn’t see a path forward. That changed earlier this year when a sequel series was officially announced. Called Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, the show will be directed and executive produced by Chloé Zhao, with Lilla and Nora Zuckerman writing the scripts.

The upcoming series, New Sunnydale, will feature a new Slayer and several new characters. The cast includes Faly Rakotohavana, Ava Jean, Sarah Bock, Daniel Di Tomasso, Jack Cutmore-Scott, and Kingston Vernes. Currently, Buffy is the only original character confirmed to return.
