Bruce Willis’s wife Emma Heming reveals their young children are ‘grieving’ their father after his dementia diagnosis

Emma Heming, Bruce Willis’s wife, has shared that their children are saddened and coping with the news of his dementia.

The 47-year-old model and influencer has been caring for her 70-year-old actor husband since he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). This type of dementia affects the parts of the brain that control personality and the ability to communicate, leading to a slow decline in these areas.

The actor has kept a low profile since learning of his illness, but his wife, Emma, and family sometimes share news about how he’s doing.

Emma recently shared how her daughters, 13-year-old Mabel Ray and 11-year-old Evelyn Penn, are handling their father’s illness.

Despite the challenges, Emma told Vogue Australia on Friday that she believes they are managing well.

It’s heartbreaking for them to lose their dad, and they really feel his absence, especially during important moments. It’s hard, but kids often find a way to cope, though I used to dislike hearing that said because it didn’t fully acknowledge how difficult this experience was.

She added: ‘I don’t know if my kids will ever bounce back, but they’re learning and so am I.’

Just recently, people close to the Willis family shared that Emma Heming Willis is facing the difficult task of caring for Bruce as his health declines, while also handling his significant financial assets.

Caring for Bruce goes beyond just his emotional and physical well-being; it also includes managing the large amount of money he earned during his successful acting career.

Emma stated that having her husband live separately was the most beneficial choice for their family.

Now that Bruce has moved to a new home with around-the-clock care, his wife feels she can simply focus on being his partner again.

Emma told The Sunday Times: ‘It was of the hardest decisions I ever had to make.

Despite the pain and difficulty, it was the best decision – for everyone involved, including my husband, our daughters, and myself. In the end, it allowed me to reconnect with him as his wife, and I’m incredibly grateful for that.

Emma also explained that this change has helped Bruce become more independent and allowed him to spend time with friends and family again.

It’s been a huge relief that more of my friends and family have been able to connect with him on their own terms, away from my house. I no longer worry about hosting, managing expectations, or witnessing their difficult reactions to his condition.

Bruce Willis has around $250 million in savings, and his wife is now managing those funds because his frontotemporal dementia has progressed to the point where he can’t handle them with assistance.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) damages the brain areas responsible for language, behavior, and personality. While it’s a type of dementia, unlike Alzheimer’s, people with FTD don’t typically experience immediate memory loss; instead, they often first show changes in their personality.

This disease affects the parts of the brain that control good judgment, self-control, and making decisions. As a result, people with the condition may struggle to manage their money, even if they have help from financial advisors.

According to a family source, she’s learning things as she goes and it’s understandable she’s feeling overwhelmed right now.

Taking care of everything has become a full-time job for Emma. She didn’t expect to be handling it all when she and Bruce became a couple, as Bruce previously had a large team managing those responsibilities.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a less common form of dementia, affecting around 50,000 to 60,000 people in the United States. This is significantly lower than Alzheimer’s disease, which affects over 6 million Americans. FTD accounts for approximately one in twenty dementia cases.

During an August interview with Diane Sawyer, Emma revealed that her husband now lives in a separate, single-story house with around-the-clock care.

A separate family insider told the Daily Mail: ‘He is going downhill fast.’

Scout Willis shared a new photo with her father Bruce to Instagram last month.

Demi Moore and Bruce Willis’s 34-year-old daughter was spotted relaxing outside with her father and sister Tallulah on a wicker sofa.

Tallulah was wearing a yellow top and black leggings, while her dad, Bruce, had on a grey T-shirt and black slacks. Scout was comfy in a soft pink hoodie and sweatpants.

The family’s elder statesman appeared relaxed and happy in the unusual social media post. Scout captioned the Instagram photo, ‘Sending greetings from a wonderful summer!’
