In a heartfelt, recent interview, Emma Heming Willis shared the impact her husband, Bruce Willis, battling dementia has had on her emotionally.
In 2023, it was revealed that the actor known for Die Hard, who is now 70 years old, had been diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), a type of dementia that leads to a progressive loss of functions related to personality and language skills over time.
During the ABC special interview with Diane Sawyer titled “Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey,” the 47-year-old author disclosed that following his diagnosis, he sought treatment for depression.
Emma expressed deep distress and a sense of solitude upon hearing about his health struggle, feeling utterly overwhelmed and isolated.
To ensure she could take care of both herself mentally and support Bruce, she sought guidance from professionals and employed live-in caregivers to aid him.
It’s a real blessing for us that we can provide care, something many other families struggle with. The cost of professional caregiving is incredibly high, but it’s well worth the investment as they truly deserve it.

Emma, who got married to Bruce in 2009, has mentioned that her current focus is on raising awareness about the disease.
The main reason I’m working on spreading information about this illness is so that more families and individuals can get diagnosed earlier in the disease process. This will enable them to take part in clinical trials,” she explained.
I’d inquire about his well-being, check if he’s alright and feeling good. I’d also ask how we could help him more effectively. I’d be curious to know about any fears or worries he might have.
‘You know, I just would love to be able to, just to have a conversation with him.’
In the same interview, it was also mentioned that at times, the real personality of the actor can emerge.
She shared with Diane, “Life gives us special moments. It’s his laughter, really. You know, it’s so infectious, and occasionally you’ll catch a sparkle in his eyes or a mischievous grin, and it feels like I’m whisked away.
After a brief pause, her eyes welled up with tears, and she said softly, “It’s challenging to witness these fleeting moments disappear so swiftly like this” (snapping fingers), “and that’s truly difficult.
After several consultations with various physicians, the couple eventually discovered the reason behind their husband and father’s sudden detachment from the family – a change that previously characterized him as sociable and active.
She stated, “He seemed distant and chilly, which is unusual for someone as loving and tender as Bruce. It was startling and unsettling to see him act so differently.

Emma shares daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, with the Moonlighting star.
I can’t help but feel a sense of pride that shares three extraordinary women – Rumer (age 37), Scout (34), and Tallulah (31) – with the incredible Demi Moore. Each one is unique in their own right, a testament to their shared genes and upbringing.
Upon learning that the brain scan had confirmed her Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) diagnosis, Emma expressed her distress by saying, ‘I felt incredibly frightened.’ Hearing the diagnosis, a term unfamiliar to her at first, caused her apprehension.
‘I remember hearing it and just not hearing anything else. It was like I was freefalling.’
As a fervent admirer, I can tell you that when someone inquired about my belief regarding whether Bruce, the phenomenal actor from Pulp Fiction, grasped the situation, I replied, “I don’t believe he fully pieced together the puzzle.
Previously, she was using the model professionally, but now she devotes all her time to caring for her husband. She has also penned a book sharing her personal experiences from this new role.
The Unexpected Journey will be released on September 9.
Concerning Bruce’s health, she mentioned that he remains quite active. Overall, he’s in excellent shape, but sadly, it’s his cognitive abilities that are deteriorating.
As The Sixth Sense star looses his ability to speak, Emma said the family has ‘learned to adapt.’
‘Our means of interaction with him are unique, in a special kind of way. Yet, I’m filled with gratitude because my husband remains very much present with me.’
She also revealed the subtle yet ‘alarming’ first signs he was battling dementia.

Instead of being particularly chatty or outgoing, he tended to be a bit reserved. During family gatherings, he seemed to soften or lose a bit of his usual presence.
He soon began losing words, and a stutter he dealt with as a child returned.
Frontotemporal degeneration gradually affects regions of the brain responsible for language, behavior, and personality, differentiating it from Alzheimer’s disease, the most prevalent type of dementia. While Alzheimer’s patients often experience significant memory loss early on, those with Frontotemporal degeneration first exhibit changes in their character or behavior rather than immediate memory loss.
As a devoted enthusiast, I can’t help but share some staggering numbers regarding two neurological conditions that have impacted countless lives – Alzheimer’s and Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD). While Alzheimer’s is a giant in this field with over 6 million victims, it’s essential to recognize the presence of FTD. Approximately one out of every twenty dementia cases are accounted for by FTD, amounting to roughly 50,000 to 60,000 Americans affected, compared to the alarming number of those battling Alzheimer’s. It is a statistic that serves as a call to action and emphasizes the importance of ongoing research and support in this vital area.
