Bruce Willis' wife Emma Heming reveals why she won't 'shield' daughters from his dementia battle

As a die-hard fan of Bruce Willis, I find Emma Heming’s bravery and openness about their family’s journey with dementia truly inspiring. Her decision to educate their daughters honestly and openly about their father’s condition is commendable. It’s heartwarming to see how they continue to share moments of love, joy, and sweetness despite the challenging circumstances.

Emma Heming, Bruce Willis’ spouse, has explained her decision to candidly discuss his struggle with dementia in front of their teenage daughters.

Heming, 46, wed Willis, 69, in 2009 and the pair share Mabel Ray, 12, and Evelyn, 10.

In February 2023, it was announced that the actor famous for Die Hard had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). This revelation came shortly after his retirement from acting, which was due to his battle with a condition called aphasia, an affliction that impacts both speech and language comprehension.

In an interview with Katie Couric for Town & Country Magazine, Heming made it clear that he hadn’t attempted to soften the reality of Willis’ health issues for their daughters. Instead, they had observed his deterioration throughout the years.

She said: ‘This disease is misdiagnosed, it’s missed, it’s misunderstood, so finally getting to a diagnosis was key so that I could learn what frontotemporal dementia is and I could educate our children.

I’ve always been honest with them, as they’ve witnessed Bruce’s deterioration throughout their lives. I’m not trying to protect them from reality, but rather, letting them experience it truthfully.

‘Our therapist taught me that when children ask questions, it means they’re eager to learn the answer. If I notice Bruce is facing difficulties, I would explain it to the kids so they can comprehend. However, this condition he has is persistent, worsening over time, and unfortunately, it’s incurable.’

As a die-hard fan, I’d rather avoid discussing the grim reality of it with them, and fortunately, they haven’t sought such discussions. However, our little ones are aware that their beloved Dad isn’t on the mend.

Heming stated that she wouldn’t let Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD) destroy our entire family, as that wasn’t Bruce’s wish. Moreover, she expressed her resolve to aid other families in similar situations.

In the course of our conversation, she disclosed that the legendary actor struggled with speech during the initial stages of his cognitive deterioration. At first, I mistakenly assumed it was a resurgence of the debilitating stutter he had battled during his teenage years.

She mentioned that he struggled greatly with a severe stutter during his childhood, but a university theater professor later introduced him to a wide array of possibilities.

As an acting enthusiast, I discovered something fascinating during my training years – my usual stutter seemed to vanish miraculously when I recited lines from scripts I’d memorized.

‘That’s what propelled him into acting,’ Emma said.

She added that he continued to deal with the stutter throughout his life, though he developed the ability to cover it up well in most situations.

In the early stages of my husband’s linguistic deterioration, I struggled to recognize the signs due to my own persistent stutter, which often clouded my judgement and hindered me from fully understanding his speech impairment.

Initially, it appeared as though the alteration in his speech was simply a manifestation of a stutter, but it turned out to be none other than Bruce,” she disclosed. “I never imagined that such a condition could be early-onset dementia in someone so young.

Actor known for The Sixth Sense has five daughters as his offspring; three of them, Rumer (aged 36), Scout (33), and Tallulah (30), were born from his previous marriage to Demi Moore.

During an interview with The Drew Barrymore Show in September, at the age of 61, Moore shared some news about her former spouse’s health. She stated that, considering the circumstances, he is currently in a steady and secure state.

Moore, who was married to Willis between 1987 and 2000, shared insights about how she’s guided her children through the protracted family health predicament they’ve faced.

In his appearance, Moore expressed, “I tell my children to connect with them as they currently are, not based on their past or my expectations for them.

Consequently, it’s filled with such beauty, joy, love, and warmth. Whenever I’m in Los Angeles, I visit weekly, cherishing each moment we spend together.

Rumer said, ‘He is great. I love him so much. Thank you.’

In May, Rumer shared on the Today show that her father was in a positive state and was growing close to their one-year-old daughter Louetta, whom she co-parents with ex Derek Richard Thomas.
