Bruce Willis, the famous actor, turned 71 on Thursday. His wife, Emma Heming, shared a loving message to celebrate his birthday as he continues to battle dementia.
Heming posted a heartwarming throwback photo of Bruce Willis smiling by the water on Instagram to celebrate his birthday.
Heming, mother to Willis’ daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, used the occasion to publicize her recently established charity, The Emma & Bruce Willis Fund, which she revealed last week.
She shared that dealing with her husband’s frontotemporal dementia (FTD) helped her understand the challenges many families experience. This led her to establish The Emma & Bruce Willis Fund, which aims to increase understanding of FTD, fund research efforts, and provide support for those who dedicate themselves to caring for loved ones with the condition.
Bruce Willis, who has three daughters – Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 32 – with his former wife, Demi Moore, received a diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia in 2022 when he was 67 years old.
Heming suggested that if people want to pay tribute to Bruce today, they could donate to the fund or a similar organization, or simply reach out to someone who provides care – even a small gesture of support can be incredibly meaningful.
On March 12th, Heming announced the creation of The Emma & Bruce Willis Fund at a benefit event in New York held by The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration.
This charity works to improve understanding of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) by increasing public awareness, funding important research, and providing better support for those who care for people with the condition.
Heming shared with the audience that going through this experience has shown her the challenges many families deal with when someone they care for has frontotemporal dementia.
I strongly believe we need to fund research and also support the everyday heroes – the caregivers – who do so much for others.
Honestly, everything I do now is about making sure more people get frontotemporal dementia. It’s just…it’s so misunderstood! And more than that, I want anyone going through this – any family – to know they’re not invisible. I want them to feel like someone sees their struggle and is there with them, so they don’t have to face it all alone. That’s what this is all about, really.
She also said Bruce was a naturally kind and giving person, and would be happy to know this initiative is supporting families affected by the illness.
Heming posted photos from the event, including a selfie with her daughters, Mabel and Evelyn, a picture of herself performing on stage, and a photo of her assigned seating card.
Married since 2009, the couple recently gained attention when it was discovered that Bruce had moved to a separate, smaller home nearby. He now receives around-the-clock care from a dedicated team of professionals there.
In January, Heming disclosed that she visits the actor ‘all the time.’
She often eats meals with Willis and their two daughters, and Emma Heming Willis often joins her husband for breakfast.
In a recent podcast interview, she described their home as a second home and a place full of cherished memories. She explained that it provides Bruce with round-the-clock care, while their other home focuses on supporting their children’s needs, and this arrangement has been very successful for the family.
She added that Willis has been ‘thriving’ in the new environment.
Honestly, moving Willis into his own place was incredibly tough. It’s been one of the hardest things I’ve had to do throughout his health journey, but I knew it was the right step for him.
It wasn’t a simple process. Those providing care often have to make difficult choices, and they need to prioritize the well-being and safety of their loved one and their family.
‘Bruce wouldn’t want his two young daughters to be clouded by his disease. I know that.’
It was a tough period for us. We really weren’t socializing much – no sleepovers, no playdates, and we mostly kept to ourselves. We just weren’t having people over at all, and it felt isolating.
She recently told The Sunday Times that despite the pain and difficulty, the decision they made was the correct one – for him, their daughters, and herself. She felt it allowed her to rebuild her marriage, which she described as a wonderful outcome.
The decision has also allowed Bruce more freedom to reconnect with friends and family.
Honestly, it’s been such a relief to see my loved ones connect with him on their own terms. Before, it always felt like everything happened at my place, and I was constantly worried about how they’d react, especially seeing their sadness. Now, they can have their own private moments with him, and I don’t have to worry about managing everything or being around for their reactions. It’s made a huge difference for all of us.
During the podcast, Heming shared that her husband doesn’t know he has been diagnosed with dementia.
In 2023, Bruce Willis’ family shared that he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, a type of dementia that quickly affects the parts of the brain controlling personality and the ability to speak and understand language.
Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) impacts the areas of the brain responsible for language, behavior, and personality. While it’s a type of dementia, unlike Alzheimer’s, people with FTD don’t typically experience immediate memory loss; instead, they often show noticeable changes in their personality.
This disease affects the parts of the brain that control judgment and decision-making, potentially causing patients to struggle with managing money, which adds to the challenges faced by those caring for them.
While Bruce Willis has largely retired from public life, his family still shares updates about his health from time to time.
