Bruce Johnston leaves the Beach Boys after 60 years

I was a little sad to hear that Bruce Johnston, who’s been touring with The Beach Boys for over sixty years, is retiring from the band. It’s the end of an era – he’s been a constant presence with them for as long as I’ve been listening!

Okay, so I was reading an interview with 82-year-old Don Johnston, and he basically said he’s launching what he’s calling ‘part three’ of his music career! He’s feeling super creative and says songwriting is his real strength, so he’s really diving back in and promises some new stuff is on the way. Sounds like he’s got plenty more music left in him, which is awesome!

The new box set, ‘We Gotta Groove,’ revisits the Beach Boys’ recordings made at Brother Studio in 1976 and 1977.

Mike Love of The Beach Boys shared that Bruce Johnston is a remarkably talented songwriter, singer, and keyboard player. He expressed gratitude for Bruce’s many years of performing and contributing to the band. While acknowledging that things are changing, Love emphasized this isn’t the end for The Beach Boys.

Johnston first became involved with the group in 1965, initially performing live vocals when Brian Wilson wasn’t available, and he even contributed to the song “California Girls.” He later left in 1972 to focus on his own music career, and went on to write the popular song “I Write The Songs” for Barry Manilow.

A co-founder of The Beach Boys recently spoke with The Times about his former bandmate and the significant impact they both had on Southern California’s music scene.

Mike Johnston rejoined the Beach Boys in 1978 and remained a touring member alongside Carl Wilson, being the last original-era member to do so. He also contributed several songs to the group, including “Disney Girls (1957),” “Deirdre,” and “Tears in the Morning.” Chris Cron, who sings with the Beach Boys tribute band Pet Sounds Live, will now take Johnston’s place.

Even after Brian Wilson’s passing last year, fans can still experience the Beach Boys’ music in concert. Mike Love continues to tour with his version of the band, and they’ll be performing at the Hollywood Bowl over the July 4th weekend (with a special appearance by John Stamos). Plus, founding member Al Jardine is touring with Brian Wilson’s former bandmates, now known as The Pet Sounds Band, playing songs primarily from the 1977 album, “The Beach Boys Love You.”
