Brooke Shields’ daughter Grier reveals why nepo baby tag ‘hurts’ her feelings

Despite the advantage of being associated with her well-known mother, the 18-year-old has encountered being branded as a ‘nepotism kid’, which is often a disparaging term suggesting that one’s fame and achievement might be seen as unwarranted or undeserved due to family connections.
As an ardent admirer, I’d like to rephrase that in a more personal perspective: This blossoming runway sensation, who’s currently signed with Tommy Hilfiger, bristles at the label when it comes to her fresh modelling journey and the bond she shares with her mom.
During an interview with People, the 18-year-old New York City native shared that they’ve been addressed by a particular term countless times, and went on to explain its significance to them and the emotions it evokes.
I’m unaffected by their comments on my social media since they’re hidden behind screens, yet it still manages to hurt my feelings. Having a mother who models, and aspiring to model myself, does provide some encouragement. However, if I manage to break into the industry and they disapprove of how I look, there’s no chance they’ll ask me back.
Later, Henchy disclosed one of the philosophies her mother imparted regarding leveraging her fame and contacts for obtaining auditions – a valuable lesson she had received as a celebrity.
As Henchy, aged 18, shared, my mother can arrange for me to enter a certain space, but she can’t make me remain there. This is one of the advantages associated with having a well-known family member.
‘A famous parent can only take you so far; if I were poor at my work, I would be let go. If Rowan were poor at her work, she too would be dismissed,’ Henchy stated, alluding to her sister’s recent internship at Good Morning America in a detailed interview prior to her college transition.
This coming summer, Grier will depart from home to start her first year at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, mimicking the path taken by her elder sister before her.
With graduation fast approaching and now being a senior, Rowan isn’t strictly adhering to her mother’s path, yet she aspires to tread on a similar career route – becoming a broadcast journalist in the entertainment industry. Her ambition is to interview celebrities, including her mother and other prominent figures, just like her mother did.
At ABC’s GMA, Rowan, aged 21, works as an intern. She often finds herself asking, “What can I help with?” Instead. She confessed that she isn’t shy about utilizing her connections during the internship. When asked if she felt guilty for doing so, she replied, “It would be a pity not to utilize them a bit.”
As a seasoned model, actress, and businesswoman with a career that began at only 11 months old, Shields brings a wealth of wisdom and work ethic to her daughters.
More than half a century has passed since then, and she’s still diligently pursuing her original career paths. Most recently, she introduced Commence, LINK, a hair care brand catering to women over forty, and also stars as the leading actress in the romantic comedy film “Mother Of The Bride”.
In an unusual manner, I believe it motivates them to put more effort, the actress, aged 59, expressed about her daughters, referring to her relentless work ethic in her profession.
She disclosed that she would tell Grier, “It’s likely to be an uncomfortable experience for you, and you might feel tired.” She added, “There may be some awkwardness or discomfort regarding your attire, unfortunately that’s the way it is. Arriving early and staying late implies something.”
Shields became well-known for playing the main character in Louis Malle’s movie, “Pretty Baby” (1978). In this film, she featured in explicit scenes that were filmed when she was only eleven years old.
Throughout her teenage and young adult years, as well as during the 1980s, she persisted with modeling. Notable roles in dramas such as “Blue Lagoon” (1980) and “Endless Love” (1981) were part of this phase. However, she eventually put her career on hold to pursue her education at Princeton University, earning a bachelor’s degree in Romance languages upon graduation.

Following her comeback, Shields initially took on smaller parts in movies. However, she eventually secured a significant breakthrough role in the popular sitcom Suddenly Susan (1996-2000), as well as roles in Lipstick Jungle (2008-2009), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2017-2018), and Mr. Pickles (2014-2019).
With their two daughters off at Wake Forest pursuing their education, Shields and her spouse, Chris Henchy, have transitioned into a life without children under their roof – they’re now proud empty nesters.
In a heartfelt Instagram post in late August, as shared by Today, Shields expressed, “They are united at least,” while dabbing her eyes. She admitted, “It’s not simple. It’s not easy for the mothers. Honestly, it feels so strange that (Grier) isn’t here with us.”
The New York City native is gearing up for the release of her upcoming new book – Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts On Aging As A Woman- about ‘how midlife can be the prime of life,’ which is set to drop January 14, 2025.
