Brooke Shields openly discussed the difficulties she encounters while bringing up her daughters, Grier (age 18) and Rowan (age 21), in today’s society.
On Tuesday, during a photo shoot for a feature article in Real Simple, the 59-year-old actress expressed that she is guiding her daughters to accept and celebrate aging by challenging the traditional beauty norms set by Hollywood.
She commented to the source, “When I gaze upon my daughters, I notice things are more elevated, snug, and polished. I understand that it’s all attractive and marketable. However, I wish for them not to fear growing up as old as me.
In today’s world, we tend to prioritize youth over wisdom and experience, often forgetting the worth that maturity and time can bring.
During the course of the conversation, the actress who played the lead in The Blue Lagoon expressed that she educates her grown daughters on the constantly evolving concept of beauty, stating that today’s society can be quite ‘absurd’.
She doesn’t hesitate to tell them how beautiful they are, and for good reason – they truly are beautiful in her eyes as their mother. However, there’s always a condition attached. That’s what she shared.
She went on to explain, “Beauty varies greatly among individuals and cultures, and it’s just one aspect of who you are. It forms a segment of your unique identity.
Absolutely, we possess a society that tends to standardize and categorize. People often label me as ‘the face of a decade’. But who has the authority to make such a determination? It seems preposterous to me that a single face would be branded like that. It’s nothing short of absurd.
The well-known actress, who has been married to Chris Henchy for almost 24 years, also shares the children Grier and Rowan with him; it was in August when Grier expressed an interest in modeling.
Originating from New York, she openly communicated to her youngest child that she is no longer familiar with the current industry, and she candidly disclosed the challenging counsel she imparted.
She informed Grier, “I won’t serve as your manager since I’m currently unfamiliar with the industry. However, I can share knowledge, have a rich history, and offer my insights, as I haven’t been involved in shows.
In my perspective, craving fame solely for the sake of recognition or wealth isn’t enough. There should be a profound motivation driving this pursuit, as the journey is often arduous and devoid of immediate rewards. It’s more than just being enjoyable; it’s about enduring challenges and facing gratitude-deficient situations.
Brooke clearly stated that she wouldn’t manage her daughters if they opt to establish a career in the entertainment world. Instead, she advised them to seek out an agent.
In my freshman year at college, I, Grier, have openly acknowledged that having a renowned mother has provided me with certain opportunities. However, it is essential to clarify that just because I am connected to someone in the industry, it does not automatically translate into casting directors requesting my return. The success of my career remains in my hands and the quality of work I produce.
She noted: ‘Being known as a famous mother offers limited advantages. If I were incompetent at my work, I would be let go. If Rowan were incompetent, she too would be dismissed. To maintain employment, one must excel at their tasks.’
The 21-year-old college senior spent last summer interning at Good Morning America.
Rowan added, “As an intern, I’m always seeking help by asking, ‘What can I assist with?’ It seems inefficient not to utilize Brooke’s knowledge a bit.
The actress portraying the Bride’s mother expressed that allowing her daughters to chart their own career paths encourages them to put more effort into their professional growth.
She conveyed, “I’ll tell Grier, things might get awkward for you, you may feel tired. There could be signs of disapproval or unease regarding what you wear, and that’s simply how it is. Arriving early and staying late implies something.
