Brooke Bellamy reveals she’s been inundated with support as she opens two new bakeries amid plagiarism row: ‘Everyone in Queensland is rallying behind me’
Brooke Bellamy has shared how her community rallied around her as she faced a plagiarism row.
In a turn of events, the beleaguered baker, formerly under allegations of recipe theft, is expanding her business by launching two fresh bakeries – one on the Gold Coast and another in Mt Gravatt, Brisbane.
She expressed gratitude towards Queenslanders for standing by her during her professional advancement amidst the controversy, sharing that she’s received an overwhelming amount of encouraging messages.
As a cookbook author, I shared with The Courier Mail on Thursday that there’s a strong sense of support from folks in Queensland and my hometown, Tasmania. They’ve been encouraging me by saying, “Keep going, we’re behind you every step of the way.
I’ve put a tremendous amount of effort into establishing this brand, and I’m committed to continuing that work. It’s crucial for me to maintain this dedication not just for myself, but also for the 30 team members who rely on me. So, you can count on me to keep pushing forward each day.

On Sunday, Bellamy disclosed her growth strategies as she marked the third anniversary of managing Brooki Bakehouse.
She has also revealed she is expecting her second child.
The bakehouse already has three locations and is ‘about to open their fourth and fifth locations’.
Bellamy remarked in a video on Instagram that it’s astonishing to think about all that has occurred during the last three years.
Additionally, I’m thrilled to share that another little Brooki is expected!
After taking a short break, the popular baker resumed activity on social media over the weekend, following a dispute over claims that her bestselling cookbook, “Bake with Brooki,” included recipes originally credited to two well-known chefs.
In a recent blog post, Bellamy acknowledged that she didn’t actually invent the recipes in her cookbook. Instead, she explained that she was inspired by various sources and individuals.
In her latest video, she mentioned that it has been a while since she last posted a video due to opening her bakery three years back and consistently sharing her life online.

‘But I’ve also never experienced something like I have over the last few weeks.’
Nagi Maehashi, the founder of RecipeTin Eats, ignited a buzz online in April by disclosing on her renowned blog that her Caramel Slice and Baklava recipes were allegedly copied for a published book without her consent.
On Saturday, a video was uploaded displaying Bellamy making an early morning appearance at her Fortitude Valley bakery situated in the heart of Brisbane city, while she put on her distinctive pink “Brooki” apron.
The renowned baker openly acknowledged that although every one of the 100 recipes in the book held a personal touch from her, they all found their origins in previously established recipes as sources of inspiration.
She mentioned that each recipe in her book is special to her, but she didn’t originate the cookie, cupcake, brownie, or cake recipes. Instead, they were inspired by others before her.
Bellamy acknowledged that creators from different parts of the globe had significantly impacted her, yet she emphasized that her mother served as her primary inspiration throughout her journey.
She shared that her fascination with bakeries and bakers worldwide has been profound, yet it’s her mother who has been the most inspiring figure in her life. Growing up, she learned the art of cooking and baking right in their family kitchen with her mom by her side.
Since Bellamy initially refuted Maehashi’s accusations on April 29, both Penguin Australia and Bellamy have stood firm in their denial of these claims.

Bake With Brooki was published by Penguin in October last year and retails for $49.99.
She asserted that none of the 100 recipes found in her book were copied, for these are original creations that she developed over numerous years, sparked by her childhood passion for baking and continued nurturing through regular baking sessions at home with her mother.
In March of 2020, I came across a caramel slice recipe on RecipeTin Eats that seemed strikingly familiar. As it turns out, I’ve been creating and peddling this very same dish for the past four years.
On April 30th, once more, Bellamy refuted accusations of recipe plagiarism, instead positing that all bakers generally employ similar techniques.
As a dedicated baker, I don’t simply replicate others’ recipes; instead, I find inspiration from the timeless classics. The exquisite treats you witness at Brooki Bakehouse are a reflection of my unique journey, flavor preferences, and unyielding love for baking, nurtured by countless hours in my childhood kitchen with Mum.
As an ardent baker, I’ve found that while there’s ample room for creative expression, the essence of baking lies in its scientific precision. It’s a dance between art and science, where every ingredient and measurement plays a crucial role, making it inherently formulaic.
‘Many recipes are bound to share common steps and measures: if they don’t, they simply don’t work.’
Maehashi is not the only baker to have levelled plagiarism claims against Bellamy.
After Maehashi made her allegations public, Sally McKenny, an American baker and author, subsequently asserted that her own vanilla cake recipe was also plagiarized, being used both in a published cookbook and on Bellamy’s YouTube channel without her permission.
In McKenny’s words, “Those who meticulously create and refine recipes, as well as test them, truly deserve recognition, particularly when their work appears in a top-selling cookbook.
