Brook Shields' daughter Rowan, 21, reveals her 'eyesight started to go' during battle with Type 1 diabetes

As a dedicated follower of Brooke Shields and her family, witnessing Rowan’s journey with Type 1 diabetes has been nothing short of inspiring. Having gone through similar experiences with my own family members, I can empathize deeply with their struggles.

In 2018, Rowan, the daughter of Brooke Shields, shared her harrowing experience with unidentified Type 1 diabetes and its challenging aftermath.

As a college student at 21 years old, I can’t help but look back and remember my days as a high school freshman when my health began to spiral out of control. It was then that I noticed what felt like blaring, red flags signaling the onset of a lifelong autoimmune disease.

Initially, Rowan shared in a heartfelt discussion with People that she shed a significant amount of weight at an astonishing pace. However, instead of eating one meal, she was having two meals per sitting. This excessive intake of food led to even quicker weight loss as she consumed more and more.

Additionally, it seems you have a frequent need to urinate, she mentioned. Furthermore, your vision began to deteriorate, and eventually, you developed a severe toe infection.

‘So these are blaring, red flags for undiagnosed Type 1 diabetes.’

Rowan was diagnosed later that year and has been navigating life with Type 1 diabetes ever since.

Instead of keeping it private, she often posts on Instagram about her personal experience, using pictures that showcase her Dexcom device, aiming to increase awareness and comprehension about the condition by doing so.

‘It was an adjustment,’ Brooke told the outlet.

Initially, Brooke confessed to feeling powerless, yet she was deeply impressed by Rowan’s swift development and capability when it came to managing her diabetes at only 14 years old. This included administering her own insulin injections with independence and undergoing a rapid growth phase as a result.

“Rowan added, ‘I sometimes wish I was diagnosed earlier, as I could have lived my life without it. However, despite only having it for four years, there have already been remarkable technological advancements.'”

Rowan shared that keeping her diabetes under control requires around-the-clock attention, as she has a pump and sensor on her abdomen that consistently track her blood sugar levels.

Despite it constantly being at the forefront of her thoughts, she dedicates her attention to it only when her blood sugar levels become irregular. In essence, she is learning to cope with its complexities and discovering strategies for living with the condition on a day-to-day basis.

‘It’s a 24/7 job and I’m never off duty,’ she said.

‘Regardless of whatever headache, you find a way around it. It’s something that I have and it’s now just about managing.’

Brooke shared that it took some time for Rowan to find her comfort level.

She had refused to use the monitor for a while, and the constant finger pricks throughout the day eventually became bothersome to her, which she shared.

With a monitoring tool accessible on my smartphone, I no longer need to bother her as I can check the levels myself.
