Brittany Murphy ‘suffered for months’ before she died at age 32 according her co-stars from her final film

The actors who worked with Brittany Murphy on her last movie shared memories of how she endured great hardships prior to her passing.

In a previous residence that’s now up for sale, Murphy unfortunately passed away at the age of 32 on December 20, 2009, approximately half a year following the completion of filming for Something Wicked.

According to her co-star Katie O’Grady, the actress was experiencing considerable physical difficulties while working on set.

In an interview with People, the Portlandia star expressed, “She was simply a small bird that I enjoyed being near and felt compelled to assist.

O’Grady and Murphy met in Eugene, Oregon, where they were working on the supernatural thriller. 

Through her encounters with the actress, known for captivating audiences in films like Clueless and Girl, Interrupted, O’Grady remembered her as a petite woman standing at 5 ft 3 in. She appeared delicate, and it seemed she was enduring a challenging phase of her life.

She recalled that the team felt they should handle her gently, and Eminem’s co-star was quite small, making it seem as though she could easily be picked up with minimal force.

Prior to starting the project, Murphy had significantly reduced her weight, a fact she insisted was not due to an eating disorder. Despite any physical distress, her fellow actors testified that she maintained her professionalism and kindness throughout. The award-nominated star at the Critics Choice Awards never let discomfort impact her work ethic or demeanor.

One sweltering day, O’Grady himself revealed that they were filming within the confines of a jail cell, where the heat was relentless and beads of sweat trickled down everyone’s brows. Yet, amidst this stifling situation, Murphy – a true hero in my eyes – ensured that there was an ample supply of water for all.

At another instance, the actress who voiced Happy Feet spent some time instructing her less experienced colleague on the proper placement of eye lines based on whether the camera was positioned on one side of their face or the other.

The actress who portrays Half Sisters mentioned that Brittany seemed to radiate a profound warmth and gentle essence, making one feel relaxed and soothed.

October Moore, one of the cast members, discussed preparing for a tense scene with Murphy. She was nervously playing with her slip-on footwear. Since they were seated at a bistro table, Murphy casually advised her to remove her shoes.

In simpler terms, when production ended, O’Grady remembers saying goodbye to Murphy by shaking his small hand. The main actress then expressed her joy about meeting O’Grady, saying “I’m so happy we got to meet.

‘The author and director of Silent Echoes noted that there remained a tender, affectionate aspect of her that took the effort to perform this act so gently. It was a heartfelt and compassionate farewell.’

She made meaningful interactions and fostered memorable experiences with everyone she encountered, using her abilities and available energy.

Expressing concerns about Murphy’s physical capabilities, O’Grady expressed a wish for her co-star to have had a dependable presence on set. She suggested that perhaps there was someone who could have provided strength in Murphy’s life.

In accounts by O’Grady, Murphy’s spouse, screenwriter Simon Monjack, was frequently present on sets, yet he didn’t offer the protective support that Murphy seemed to require.

In simpler terms, she stated that it becomes immediately evident when encountering someone who is unwell, and there arises a sense that this person requires protection, empowerment, and assistance.

According to the Los Angeles Coroner’s office, Murphy’s documented cause of death was pneumonia. However, they also reported that he had anemia at the time of his passing.

Monjack died of the same conditions five months later in May 2010 at age 40. 

In 2014, Something Wicked made its debut, but despite attending the film premiere, O’Grady hasn’t watched it yet. Now, however, she feels prepared to do so as a tribute to her deceased friend and fellow actor with whom she worked on The Cellar Door.

‘She really deserved a different story. Her core is so good. Her spirit is so good,’ she said. 

In essence, O’Grady argued, ‘She wasn’t someone intent on causing pain or making others feel insignificant. She didn’t deserve the narrative that unfolded. Yet, this was her story, and that’s why she came into being, and that was all that was intended.’
