Brittany Hockley’s wedding vows, originally shared months after her marriage to Benjamin Siegrist, are now getting attention online – but not for the reasons she’d hoped.
Former Bachelor star, 38, married Swiss soccer player Benjamin Siegrist, 33, in a beautiful wedding ceremony held in Bali in June.
Brittany learned German as a tribute to her husband’s family history and surprised him by reciting her wedding vows in the language, which she then shared on Instagram.
Brittany explained in a follow-up video, posted on Friday, that the initial clip became popular, especially in Germany, but not because of what people assumed.
She shared that they got married six months ago and she posted a video of the wedding. Wanting to surprise her husband, Ben, who is Swiss-German, she learned her vows in German, as she explained in the video.
So, I uploaded the video and it unexpectedly became really popular in Germany. Since all the comments were in German, I couldn’t understand them, but I just figured they were positive.
Brittany’s husband sat next to her on the couch and translated many of the comments into English, making her laugh hysterically.
‘This is comedy gold,’ Ben declared before reading out the first comment.
‘Somebody said take the mic away,’ he read as Brittany laughed loudly.
‘Months of learning only to butcher reading one paragraph solid,’ another follower commented.
The criticism was relentless, with upset German-speaking viewers bluntly stating things like, ‘That was awful,’ ‘It was really bad,’ and even, ‘I thought she was speaking Japanese.’
Someone jokingly suggested Brittany be sent back where she came from because of her poor language skills. Ben then chimed in, criticizing a comment that simply said, “Goosebumps,” implying it wasn’t a clever response.
Brittany’s humble post received a lot of comments from fans, many of whom playfully teased her.
One fan commented, jokingly asking if the nonsensical words ‘Dish, lish, tint, and fish’ were actually a playful way of saying ‘LOVE’ in German. They called it ‘hilarious’.
Brittany replied that she was trying to say: ‘I love you big squid.’
One German speaker praised Brittany for her effort, despite the results being hilarious.
As a German speaker, I recall being able to understand what you were saying, but your pronunciation was hilarious! You really put a unique twist on the German language. It’s a tough language to learn, so I appreciated the effort.
It comes after Brittany recently announced that she was relocating to Italy to live with Benjamin.
She shared the happy news in December, explaining to her Life Uncut co-host, Laura Byrne, that she and her husband needed to live closer together after trying a long-distance relationship, so they could spend more quality time together.
I’m officially moving to Italy! Ben is incredibly excited and can hardly contain himself. Surprisingly, I’m actually looking forward to the practical, everyday aspects of the move,” Brittany shared.
It’s the little things, like watching TV together or going for a walk, that we miss when we don’t have the time for them. Those simple, everyday moments.
