“British filmmaking at its best”: Call the Midwife star’s “engaging” drama confirms UK release

The upcoming drama, Think of England, starring Natalie Quarry (known for Call the Midwife), will be released in the UK. Written and directed by Richard Hawkins, the film tells the story of six people assigned a clandestine WWII mission: to produce adult films intended to uplift troop spirits before the D-Day landings.

The film, set on the Orkney Islands in the summer of 1943, centers around individuals grappling with difficult choices driven by guilt, pressure, and fear. It examines themes of right and wrong, control, and how people present themselves, all set during wartime.

Jack Bandeira, Ben Bela Böhm, Ollie Maddigan, Ronni Ancona, Oscar Hoppe, and John McCrea will join the cast alongside Quarry.

Tull Stories will release the World War II drama in the UK and Ireland in autumn 2026, following an agreement with the film’s producers, Giant Films. The film will have its London premiere on Friday, June 19th, as part of the Raindance Film Festival.

Hawkins explained that the film Think Of England came about because he was intrigued by questions of right and wrong, how people act, and how much societies’ standards of acceptable behavior can change over time.

Even though the film takes place during World War II, the issues it explores – like censorship, how images are created, and the conflict between what’s considered proper in public versus private – feel very relevant today.
