Britain’s Got Talent star Dave Betton has died at the age of 82.
The singer hadn’t performed in public for ten years when he took the stage in 2020, appearing on the show with his son, Dean. He was convinced to return to performing after retiring from club gigs.
The father and son impressed the judges with their performance of Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Life,” earning a standing ovation and advancing them to the later rounds of the competition.
Simon Cowell shared with the contestants, ‘Sometimes I just crave a comforting mug of hot chocolate, and that’s exactly what you were. You lifted my spirits, and I really needed that.’
Dave had been living in supported housing in Lytham for the past few years. He recently passed away from sepsis following a short illness.
Last month, Dean announced his father’s passing on Facebook, sharing fond memories of their time on Britain’s Got Talent.

Dean said his dad was a huge inspiration for his late start to singing. Apparently, his dad was really popular locally and used to fill clubs with people.
I really hoped he’d get to perform in front of a large live television audience one last time, even though he was retired. I was thrilled when his appearance on Britain’s Got Talent received such a fantastic reaction.
I was incredibly proud of him; he really achieved something special. The response to my Facebook post about his passing has been amazing, with over 400 messages of support and remembrance.
Dave started performing as a teenager, opening for famous singers like those in the Rat Pack. By 1981, he and his wife, Josie, purchased the Dorchester Hotel in Blackpool, and he launched his career as a professional singer performing at the hotel.
He gained popularity performing at clubs in Blackpool throughout the 1980s and 90s. He also expanded his performances internationally, touring in Australia and South Africa, and even performing in Las Vegas.
