Bring Her Back: A24’s Horror from Talk to Me Directors Debuts at 96% Rotten Tomatoes

Making a directorial debut is usually accompanied by a significant amount of pressure to create a box-office success. However, sustaining the initial excitement can prove challenging for a second film. Fortunately, it appears that this second film is shaping up to be a resounding success.

Danny and Michael Philippou’s latest horror creation, titled “Bring Her Back“, is the studio’s upcoming release. The twin directors are known for their successful venture with “Talk to Me“, which garnered exceptional reviews and set a new record as the highest-grossing horror film for the studio. Ahead of its nationwide launch on May 30, “Bring Her Back” is slightly surpassing their previous work with an almost perfect rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to “Talk to Me‘s” score of 95%.

This high score may change as more reviews are published, but it matches the quality of the previous movie by the directing duo. The thought-provoking horror movie, titled “Talk to Me“, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2022 and had a wide release on July 27, 2023. Meagan Navarro referred to the movie as the “most disheartening horror film of the year” due to its deeply depressing tone. She emphasized that the kind of grief-induced horror presented by The Philippous was just as raw and intense as anticipated, following their debut movie ‘Talk to Me’, but lacking any of the brightness or optimism.

Kristy Puchko remarked that ‘Bring Her Back’ is just as terrifying as the Philippou brothers’ initial work, and perhaps even more so. Meanwhile, Rocco T. Thompson’s review characterizes ‘Bring Her Back’ as an intensely raw portrayal of grief that emerges from such intense, exposed vulnerability that it becomes almost too much to endure.

Critic Caralynn Matassa commends the film ‘Bring Her Back’ as being “character-centric” and credits its effectiveness to this focus. She explains, “The atmosphere of foreboding and impending disaster wouldn’t be nearly as impactful if viewers weren’t able to connect with these characters.” Additionally, she appreciates the “show-don’t-tell” style employed by the Phillipous’, noting that “the movie unfolds just as a discerning viewer would anticipate. However, there are subtle instances of exposition skillfully integrated throughout that are only fully appreciated upon closer inspection.
