The popular and highly-rated black comedy series Beef is back for a second season on Netflix. The show received critical acclaim, earning a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes and winning several awards at the 2024 Primetime Emmys, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
I was so excited when Beef first came out, and critics seemed to love it too! Time called it darkly funny and smart, which totally matches what I thought, and TV Insider really highlighted how fresh and original the show was. It really stood out!
The show returns with a fresh set of characters, each harboring hidden anger that’s about to explode over the course of eight episodes. The story centers around Ashley and Austin, two young employees at a country club, who get caught up in the messy breakup of their boss, Josh, and his wife, Lindsay.

Both couples compete for the favor of Chairwoman Park (Youn Yuh-jung), the wealthy owner of an exclusive club, using both kindness and pressure. Meanwhile, Chairwoman Park is dealing with her own personal crisis – a scandal involving her second husband, Dr. Kim (Song Kang-ho).
Lee Sung Jin, the creator of Beef, explained the shift in tone between the two seasons in an interview with Tudum. He described the first season as having very direct and intense conflict, while he wanted the second season to be more subtle and realistic, reflecting the way disagreements often play out in a work environment – more passive-aggressive than outright hostile.
He added that this season would also explore the relationships and “how they evolve over time.”

Honestly, I’m a little worried about Austin and Ashley. Lee pointed out they’re a brand new couple – they haven’t really faced any challenges yet! Meanwhile, Josh and Lindsay have been together forever, they’ve seen things. Austin and Ashley seem to think love and a beach vacation are all you need, which is cute, but maybe naive. When we first meet them, things get interesting because they immediately get mixed up with Josh and Lindsay’s more established relationship – it’s going to be a clash of experiences, for sure!
“It’ll be interesting to see with these two how they react to life’s first real struggles.”
Regarding the intense argument between Josh and Lindsay that starts everything off, Isaac explained to Digital Spy that it took a lot of careful planning. He said they spent more time figuring out that scene than any other, as it sets the stage for the whole season.
That initial conflict is also how we meet the characters. I discussed with Lee Sung Jin how challenging it was – showing such a big fight when the audience doesn’t know or care about the people involved. It’s hard to make people invested in a fight when they don’t know who’s fighting or why.
I was really trying to figure out how to get invested in the story right away, but it was tough because I hadn’t had time to connect with the characters or really care about what happened to them yet.

I was really fascinated to hear Issac explain that they weren’t just trying to tell a story, but really focused on how they told it. He said their main goal was to draw people in, to make them want to listen, not tune out. He put it perfectly when he said they worked incredibly hard to find just the right tone to achieve that.
When asked about experiencing personal conflicts, So-star Melton, known as Issac, told Digital Spy that disagreements are a universal part of being human. He explained that everyone has them, saying, ‘Who hasn’t?’ and emphasizing that we all have more in common than differences.

Melton explained that working on the show Beef was a deeply personal experience. He said the character of Lee brought up buried emotions and allowed him to explore and understand himself on a deeper level.
“I think every role in a place of reverence can have an impact like that.”
