Stephen Graham‘s latest British film, Animol, is receiving positive reviews, with many calling it a “must-see.” The movie, directed by Ashley Walters (who previously worked with Graham on Adolescence), centers around life inside a juvenile detention center.
This moving story about growing up highlights the strength of the human spirit even during difficult times. It features Graham alongside rising stars Tut Nyuot (known for The Long Walk), Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Dune), and Vladyslav Baliuk.
The film first shown at the Berlin International Film Festival last month is now receiving mostly positive reviews.
Digital Spy gave the show a perfect five-star review, calling it “must-see.” They noted that even though many prison dramas exist, this one—along with shows like Sing Sing and Time—offers a fresh perspective and powerfully highlights the brutal realities of the prison system.
Honestly, one of the things that really hit me in this game was the idea that even when things feel totally hopeless, finding connection with others, and even showing kindness and love, can actually give you the strength to keep going. It’s like, when you’re at your lowest, that’s when those things matter most.

Time Out praised the film as a “brilliant British film,” highlighting its genuine care for its characters and describing it as uniquely and subtly charged with romantic tension.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is often dark and disheartening, but it still finds room for optimism, empathy, and reconciliation. What truly stands out is that it’s consistently engaging and features strong, believable acting from the entire cast.
While acknowledging the film’s strong acting and emotional depth, The Guardian ultimately described Anomol as imperfect and flawed.

Walters has described the project as very meaningful to him, explaining that it’s about the difficulty of staying true to yourself when the world expects you to fit in—a common and important life struggle.
This story is fundamentally about how people endure hardship and find security through genuine relationships. It focuses less on what happens and more on why things happen the way they do.
Animol is yet to confirm a UK release date.
