Brilliant horror Good Boy that’s “a tough watch for dog lovers” gets new UK streaming home

I’ve been hearing so much about Good Boy – it’s a horror movie all about dogs, and everyone’s saying it’s one of the best in the genre this year! But, as a huge dog person, I’ve also been warned it might be a little…intense for those of us who really love our furry friends. Good news for UK viewers though, it’s now available to stream!

This movie marks the first time Ben Leonberg has directed a film. It’s different from another film with the same title that premiered at festivals this year.

He noticed that in many horror movies, dogs seem to sense ghosts or monsters before humans do, and he thought that would be a great idea for a new film.

After a successful run in theaters – earning almost $9 million from a $70,000 production cost – the movie is now streaming on Shudder.

You can get Shudder either by subscribing directly or by adding it as a channel through the Prime Video app. New subscribers, or those who haven’t used it recently, should be eligible for a 7-day free trial through either option.

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a very strong score of 90% positive from 174 critic reviews.

Digital Spy praised the film as one of the year’s best horror movies, but warned that it might be difficult for dog lovers to watch.

I have to say, what really blew me away about Good Boy was Indy, the dog actor! He’s so good. You truly feel what he’s feeling – I really believed every emotion I saw on his face. And even though the filmmakers used some smart editing to help with that, I wasn’t thinking about the technique at all – I was completely caught up in the moment, like when he’s staring into the dark looking absolutely terrified.

Both The Observer and The Times praised Good Boy. The Observer described it as thrilling and emotionally moving, and The Times highlighted Indy’s performance as being worth seeing the film for alone.

According to Variety, even though many of the film’s visuals are confusing, they still manage to frighten both the main character and viewers. The publication also noted that Good Boy beautifully captures the strong bond between people and their pets, and its portrayal of this devotion is deeply moving.
