“Brilliant” and “evocative” Australian mystery drama with Jodie Whittaker lands new UK streaming home

In the UK, it’s been announced that the “evocative” mystery drama titled One Night, featuring Jodie Whittaker, has found its new streaming platform for viewers to enjoy.

In an Australian show, the previous actor from “Doctor Who” takes on the role of Tess, a character who experienced a harrowing tragedy alongside Simone and Nat during their youth. The three eventually reconnect in adulthood, their lives becoming intertwined due to their shared past experiences.

Without Tess and Nat knowing it, Simone has penned a novel based on her experiences which turns out to be a hit. Once Tess and Nat discover this, their relationship begins to strain.

Previously available exclusively on Paramount+ in 2023, the series “One Night” was later taken down from the streaming platform in February 2024. However, starting in August, this six-part drama will find a new audience in the UK as it gets broadcast on ITV1 and ITVX.

Featuring Nicole Da Silva and Yael Stone in lead roles, this mystery drama garnered largely favorable feedback from critics. At present, it boasts a 67% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on the opinions of six reviewers.

This show also earned a user rating of 6.8 out of 10 on IMDb, based on more than 1000 reviews. One viewer said, “This could be one of my top favorite series ever, skillfully tackling the complexities of female friendships [and] evolving perspectives over time.

This show is incredibly talented! I can’t remember seeing so much talent in a single series. Kudos to everyone involved – the writers, producers, actors, makeup artists, and designers. I really hope there will be more of this fantastic, stirring production.

Earlier, Whittaker shared with Digital Spy why she was drawn to the character of Tess. She mentioned that what made Tess intriguing and challenging for her to portray was that, unlike many characters she has played before, Tess tends to keep her pain hidden within herself.

Over the span of two decades, the armor surrounding this character has been constructed. It serves as a shield. Interestingly, those nearest to her exhibit a sense of detachment, too. In stark contrast, I found the tranquility that Tess embodied during my performance captivating.

One Night will air on ITV1 and ITVX in August.
