Bridget Jones triumphs over Captain America as it smashes UK box office records

As a game enthusiast, I’ve got to admit that I was thoroughly captivated by the success of “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” at the UK box office. It managed to outshine “Captain America: Brave New World” and even set some impressive records along the way.

On Valentine’s Day-eve, the fourth film featuring Renee Zellweger as her romantic character debuted, earning approximately £12 million during its first weekend in theaters.

Besides surpassing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most recent release, “Captain America” was initially launched before other key territories like the UK, which is quite rare. Moreover, it holds the record for the largest UK debut for a romantic comedy movie.

Previously, the highest grossing film in the Bridget Jones series was “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” from 2004, earning more than £8 million. However, “Mad About the Boy” has now set a new record for the largest UK opening within the Bridget Jones franchise.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that this is now the largest UK box office debut for the production house, Working Title. This surpasses previous hits like the Johnny English series, Love Actually, and Les Misérables.

The film titled “Mad About the Boy” didn’t quite make it to Universal Pictures’ top UK openings, ending up at position 11. Interestingly, it ranked higher than “Oppenheimer“, “Despicable Me 3“, and “Minions“.

Despite being advertised as the concluding chapter for Bridget, Zellweger herself has clarified that it may not be her definitive end.

She was certain she adored Bridget, for she could make her laugh, stir feelings within her heart, and find her utterly captivating and delightful, she admitted.

Perhaps author Helen Fielding will find inspiration and decide to continue Bridget’s story at some point in the future. I can’t imagine anyone turning that down!

In the UK and Ireland, you can catch “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” in cinemas right now. For those in the United States, it’s accessible for streaming on Peacock.
