Bridget Jones trilogy is back on Netflix ahead of fourth movie

As a huge fan of the Bridget Jones trilogy, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard that all three films are now available to stream on Netflix UK once again. The nostalgia hit me hard as I watched Renee Zellweger bring Bridget Jones back to life on the small screen.

The Bridget Jones film trilogy has returned to Netflix UK ahead of the fourth film.

The first three movies in the Bridget Jones series – “Bridget Jones’s Diary” (2001), “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” (2004), and “Bridget Jones’s Baby” (2016) – are currently streamable. Production on the fourth film is ongoing.

As a die-hard fan of Bridget Jones’s Diary, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard the news that Renée Zellweger would be reprising her role in the long-awaited third installment, “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.” Having grown up with Bridget and her mishaps, it feels like coming home to catch up with an old friend. I can still remember the first time I read Helen Fielding’s brilliant novels – the way they made me laugh, cry, and feel right at home in Bridget’s chaotic world.

The Bridget Jones films are inspired by Helen Fielding’s beloved book series, which began as a newspaper column and was later published as books. Fielding, who is both a journalist and an author, released the first book, “Bridget Jones’ Diary,” in 1996, followed by “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” in 1999.

In the early 2000s, two novels were brought to life on the big screen as films. Renee Zellweger starred in both adaptations, with the first one featuring her character Bridget, who found herself torn between two men: the charismatic publishing magnate Daniel Cleaver (played by Hugh Grant) and the distinguished lawyer Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). The initial film’s storyline was inspired by Jane Austen’s classic work “Pride and Prejudice,” though it deviated somewhat from the original plot.

As a gamer, I found myself cheering for our heroine in the latest installment, as she was put through the wringer in her quest for true love once more. Facing a familiar dilemma, she had to decide anew between the rough-around-the-edges Cleaver and the suave and sophisticated Darcy.

Ten years after the events in “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason,” the movie “Bridget Jones’s Baby” unfolds with a fresh script penned by Fielding. In this installment, Bridget is ready for the challenge of becoming a mother, and Patrick Dempsey, known for his role in “Grey’s Anatomy,” joins the cast as Jack Qwant, a new romantic interest.

In the third installment of “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” Grant’s character Cleaver was conspicuously missing. However, the series left an opening for his potential comeback, as the ending of “Bridget Jones’ Baby” revealed that Cleaver was indeed alive despite being presumed dead following a plane crash. (As a devoted fan, I can hardly wait to see Grant reprise his role in future films!)

While Grant returns for the fourth film installation, unfortunately, Firth won’t be returning as Darcy in “Bridget Jones.” This is because the storyline of “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” (2013 third book) serves as the basis for the movie.

For the upcoming installment of “Bridget,” actresses Sally Phillips, Shirley Henderson, James Callis, and Sarah Solemani rejoin the cast in their roles as Bridget’s good friends Sharon, Jude, Tom, and Miranda respectively.

Jim Broadbent and Gemma Jones will reappear as Bridget’s parents, Colin and Pamela. Additionally, Emma Thompson is set to return in her role as Doctor Rawlings from the third movie.

Newcomers joining the cast are Chiwetel Ejiofor from “Doctor Strange,” Leo Woodall known for “One Day,” Isla Fisher from “Now You See Me,” Josette Simon of “Anatomy of a Scandal,” Nico Parker in “The Last of Us,” and Leila Farzad starring in “I Hate Suzie.”

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy will be released on February 14, 2025.
