Bridget Jones star Chiwetel Ejiofor reveals how he feels to play a love interest in a rom-com for the very first time as he’s set to appear as Renée Zellweger’s onscreen fling
As a die-hard fan of captivating performances and heartwarming narratives, I can hardly contain my excitement about Chiwetel Ejiofor‘s upcoming role in “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.” This British actor, who has graced our screens with his powerful presence in diverse roles ranging from the harrowing Solomon Northup in 12 Years a Slave to the enigmatic Mordo in Doctor Strange, is set to bring yet another compelling character to life.
Actor Chiwetel Ejiofor shares his insights on taking on the role of a romantic lead in a comedy for the first time in a movie.
In the upcoming comedy/romance movie “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” the 47-year-old actor will be sharing the screen with Renee Zellweger. He’ll play a teacher who develops a romantic relationship with Bridget Jones, the main character, after her husband Mark Darcy passes away.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to note that while Chiwetel Ejiofor has graced our screens with romantic roles previously, such as playing Peter alongside Keira Knightley in Love Actually, this upcoming project marks his debut as the primary focus of a classic rom-com love story.
In a recent chat with FAULT magazine, Chiwetel Ejiofor, known for diverse roles such as the tragic Solomon Northup in 12 Years A Slave and the clever Mordo in the Doctor Strange series, shared insights about his romantic character ahead of the Valentine’s Day launch of the upcoming franchise installment.
It was pointed out that he didn’t deliberately shy away from such roles, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, playing the character of Mr. Wallaker, stated: ‘I don’t think I’ve ever avoided them in my acting career. I’m always intrigued by various roles, wondering what a part represents, and what a character signifies.’
In my career, I’ve neither clung to nor shied away from any opportunities that came my way. I don’t anticipate this changing in the future. There isn’t a genre I wouldn’t take on. I am thrilled by roles, I am thrilled by characters, I am thrilled by stories, and I am thrilled by audiences – what captivates an audience and what stirs an audience’s emotions.
He went on to say that all of the elements he listed came together ‘really beautifully’ in Bridget Jones, adding that his character is ‘truly fascinating’ to portray.
In a recent discussion, the actor from Z For Zachariah shared insights about romance in films targeted towards those over 40. He pointed out that the portrayal of attractiveness and romantic experiences is cheerfully depicted and acknowledged on-screen across all ages, particularly during middle age.
Amid the fact that a majority of the cast are over 40, Chiwetel continued: ‘I think there’s a recent tendency to focus on specific age groups when exploring attraction and romance, but historically, films have embraced love and relationships in middle age and beyond. So, it’s not a departure from cinema traditions. I think the Bridget Jones films resonate because audiences have grown up with Bridget, reflecting on their romantic experiences – both the ways we mature and the ways we don’t.’
He elaborated that although these movies carry a youthful, passionate spirit, they also dive into the longstanding themes of love, applicable at any stage of one’s life.
In the latest Bridget Jones movie, Bridget embarks on a romantic escapade with Chiwetel’s instructor character, while also rekindling her tumultuous romance with Hugh Grant’s character, Daniel Cleaver.
In addition, she’ll enter into a romantic relationship with a young man called Rockstar, portrayed by Leo Woodall (age 27) in the movie.
In this new film, the storyline mirrors the title novel, as the character Bridget navigates single motherhood after the sad demise of Mark, a role previously portrayed by Colin Firth, now aged 63.
On May 18, Renee and Leo were caught on camera collaborating amusingly, with the plot featuring Renee’s character, Bridget, finding herself trapped in a tree at Hampstead Heath.
A park warden, identifiable by their green uniform, appears to be the one coming to her aid, with the role of a Rockstar within this context.
One bystander remarked: ‘It appeared that Leo and Renee were truly enjoying themselves. Their laughter filled the air, suggesting they had a strong connection.’
The news that Bridget Jones is going to be filmed again has left fans overjoyed, with anticipation building up after the announcement of their cherished character’s return to the silver screen.
Initially, we saw Renee portray the character Bridget in the movie Bridget Jones’ Diary back in 2001. She reprised her role as Bridget in Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, released in 2004, and then made another appearance in Bridget Jones’ Baby, which hit the screens in 2016.
Earlier this year, the film was officially announced, and it was confirmed that both Renee and Hugh Grant would return to their roles. This is following the fictional death of his character Daniel Cleaver in the third installment of the series, which took place in 2016.
In 2025, the fourth installment of the franchise, which is inspired by the books written by Helen Fielding, will premiere on Universal’s streaming platform Peacock in the United States on Valentine’s Day. However, internationally, the film will be shown in movie theaters.
In the upcoming movie, Emma Thompson, known for her role as Doctor Rawlings from the previous production, will reprise her character. Additionally, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Leo Woodall (who appeared in White Lotus) are also expected to join the cast.
