The popular historical romance series has returned for a fourth season! However, the first part of the new season has unfortunately broken a record – and not in a good way.
Just like with Season 3, Netflix is releasing this season in two parts. The first set of episodes arrived on January 29th, and the remaining episodes will be available on February 26th. Despite the full season not being released yet, viewers and critics have already started sharing their reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
The latest season of the show, focusing on Benedict, has been certified fresh by critics with an 80% rating based on 40 reviews. While not the series’ lowest-rated season, that distinction belongs to Season 2 with 78%, it still received positive feedback.
Despite its popularity, Bridgerton Season 4 (Part 1) had the lowest viewership of any season so far. Viewers gave the first four episodes an average rating of 66% based on over 1,000 reviews. This score might improve when the second part of the season is released on Netflix.
Most critics agree that the fourth season of Bridgerton feels like a fairytale. While the plot is somewhat predictable, it’s still charming, romantic, and completely captivating.
One reviewer gave the adaptation of Cinderella a half-star, criticizing the plot for making the prince seem foolish for not recognizing the heroine. They pointed out that Bridgerton didn’t even attempt to address this issue. Another viewer lamented the loss of the show’s earlier charm, noting the absence of grand balls and lively social commentary. They described the current season as lacking vibrancy, with uninspired costumes and a generally unromantic and unengaging feel.
Across its four seasons, Bridgerton has been well-received, earning an 83% average rating from critics and 71% from viewers. Season 3, focusing on the romance between Colin and Penelope, is the highest-rated season so far, with an 87% ‘Certified Fresh’ score from critics and a 76% audience rating.
What Happens in Bridgerton Season 4?
The Bridgerton series has paired off three of the siblings so far: Daphne with Simon in Season 1, Anthony with Kate in Season 2, and Colin with Penelope in Season 3. Francesca also found love with John in Season 3, though her story will continue in future seasons. Interestingly, Netflix chose to tell Colin and Penelope’s story in Season 3 instead of Benedict’s, which comes first in Julia Quinn’s novels. They decided to prioritize giving that couple a happy ending at this point in the series.
Viewers got to know Benedict well, but it’s the fourth season where his character really develops. He begins the season as usual – enjoying parties and avoiding his mother’s attempts to set him up with a wife. But everything shifts at a masked ball when he meets a woman who encourages him to be authentic, even while disguised.
Inspired by the story of Cinderella, the season follows Benedict as he transforms after the ball, determined to find Sophie and going to great lengths to do so. He also begins to lose interest in his usual social life, even confronting a friend during a party.
The first part of the season had its moments, but viewers can expect even more excitement in the episodes to come, including plenty of drama, romance, and the return of fan favorites like Anthony, played by Jonathan Bailey, and Kate, played by Simone Ashley.
Bridgerton Season 4 Part 2 premieres on Feb. 26.
