Brian James, founding guitarist of punk’s The Damned, dead at 70

Brian James, the original guitarist who co-founded the pioneering and impactful British punk rock group, The Damned, has passed away at the age of 70.

On March 6th, it was officially confirmed on Brian James’ Facebook page that he had passed away. No specific cause was mentioned in the announcement. The message conveyed was deeply poignant: “With profound sorrow, we share the news of the death of one of music’s genuine trailblazers – guitarist, songwriter, and a true gentleman, Brian James.

The Band ‘The Damned’ holds a notably significant role in rock music history, as they debuted “New Rose,” generally regarded as the first British punk single, in 1976. Additionally, they were the pioneers of their genre to release a studio album (“Damned Damned Damned” in 1977) and embark on a tour across the United States, marking milestones for the punk scene.

Originating from London, James kick-started his musical journey with the proto-punk group known as London SS, which included future members of The Clash and Generation X. Not long after, he crossed paths with a local band called Masters of the Backside, consisting of future Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde, Dave Vanian on vocals, Captain Sensible on bass, and Rat Scabies on drums. Leaving out Hynde, James teamed up with the remaining three members in 1976 to create The Damned. The band made its first appearance that same year and had the privilege of opening for the Sex Pistols at the iconic 100 Club, a London venue instrumental in shaping the punk scene.

In historical records, they’d often be described as ‘vulgar’, ‘extravagant’, ‘drugs users’, and ‘drag queens.’ However, Johansen came to understand that their lifestyle was actually a form of artistic expression.

Approximately five weeks prior to the Sex Pistols’ release of “Anarchy in the U.K.”, which became one of the most iconic early punk songs, the Damned had already released “New Rose.” This energetic and chaotic track, written by James, took the British rock sound of the time, gave it a raw edge, painted it with black eyeliner and lipstick, and heralded a fresh sound and cultural movement to the world.

The Damned will join the Pistols for a short tour soon. After performing in the U.S., the Damned are credited with sparking both the hardcore punk and goth-rock scenes in Southern California. Bands like Black Flag found inspiration in their minimalistic approach and lightning-fast beats, while groups such as Christian Death and 45 Grave were drawn to their daring style.

From 1977’s “Music for Pleasure,” James was no longer a part of the Damned as they took a short hiatus and regrouped without him. Subsequently, he embarked on tours with Iggy Pop’s band, collaborated on solo projects featuring Stewart Copeland from The Police on drums, and established Lords of the New Church alongside Stiv Bators. Periodically, the original Damned members reunited for performances, first in 1988 and most recently in 2022.

James thrives on novel experiences and enjoys collaborating with various artists, as stated by his family. His life’s work, spanning over six decades, showcased his boundless creativity and remarkable prowess in music.

James is survived by his wife, Minna, son, Charlie, and daughter-in-law, Alicia.
