Brent Spiner Hints Star Trek: Legacy Could Still Happen With a Major Twist
In the third season, Brent Spiner‘s Data character, who had previously been ‘killed’ twice throughout the lengthy run of the Star Trek franchise, evolved to become the most human-like synthetic version of himself. The third season of Picard brought back the cast from Star Trek: The Next Generation for a final joint mission (spoiler: they saved the galaxy once more).
During an interview on a particular show, Katee Sackhoff (known for The Mandalorian and Battlestar Galactica) questioned Brent Spiner about the possibility of him reprising his role as Data. Spiner hinted that there might be a chance and discussed Terry Matalas’ concept for a spinoff focusing on Jeri Ryan’s Captain Seven of Nine, which could potentially take place in Picard Season 3 (if it ever happens). Since the third season of Picard is scheduled to end in 2023, fans have been circulating online and offline petitions to make this idea a reality.
Picard Showrunner Tried to Make a Spinoff Happen
According to Spiner, who’s played Data since 1987, he was aiming for a new show that wouldn’t primarily focus on the TNG cast. Instead, they aimed to prolong the series with Jeri Ryan and some of the newer actors from Picard’s third season, who could carry a show independently. He suggested that we might have made occasional appearances in this concept.
In all three seasons of “Picard”, Spiner made an appearance, taking on the character of Altan Soong, who is the biological child of Dr. Noonien Soong’s creator, Data, in Season 1. He also reprised his role as Data itself. Later on in Season 2, he portrayed Adam Soong, a forebearer of Dr. Noonien Soong.

Star Trek: Legacy Might Happen Without the TNG Cast
In the finale of Season 3, Captain Seven of Nine, played by Jeri Ryan, and her crew – including Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) and Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) – were seen in command of the USS Enterprise G, which was previously known as the USS Titan A. This thrilling conclusion paves the way for a potential spinoff series by establishing their leadership over this starship.
Spiner mentioned that it could have been intriguing and might yet transpire, though he’s unsure for us but for Jeri. Known as ‘Legacy’, there remains a glimmer of expectation that this would persist. He believes the fans would appreciate seeing this continue, but there are numerous other projects that the Star Trek team have in store.
Matalas is Working on Vision Quest
Currently, enthusiasts must be patient to discover if Matalas’ project, titled “Legacy”, will materialize, given that he is engrossed in managing the freshly launched “Vision Quest” animated series on Disney+ at present. Alternatively, he may be involved with an animated series for Netflix as well.
Alex Kurtzman, the overseer of Star Trek at Paramount Studios, is currently producing content for Paramount+ and is also engaged in projects that are still in development. Moreover, it’s worth noting that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will premiere its third season soon, with its fourth season already underway. Furthermore, whispers of a new Star Trek series being developed are circulating as well. Additionally, the potential impact of Skydance Media acquiring Paramount on the future of Star Trek is something to keep an eye on.
Star Trek: Picard is streaming on Paramount+, as is the entire Star Trek franchise.
