As an ardent fan of Brendan O’Carroll’s work, I can’t help but feel like I’ve grown up with the Brown family. From their humble beginnings as a radio play to their current status as a household name, it’s been an absolute joy to witness the evolution of this phenomenal sitcom.

Brendan O’Carroll has accepted that Mrs Brown’s Boys is ‘marmite’ television

For nearly 14 years, the comedian, now 69 years old, has played the leading role in a long-running BBC sitcom. She first introduced this character during the early 1990s through a radio play, bringing it to life on air.

However, following the continued broadcast of the show and its recent win at the NTA awards, he acknowledged that some people might either adore or dislike it. Moreover, he emphasized that any form of artistic expression is inherently subjective in nature.

According to him, he finds both music and comedy to be highly subjective. In other words, what one person may find hilarious, another might not find amusing at all.

At one point, humor became increasingly sarcastic and disrespectful towards disadvantaged groups, and I found myself thinking, “I’m not sure…

Additionally, there are others who find me extremely amusing. People close to me often exclaim, “Oh no, he’s hilarious! Can you believe it? He’s hilarious!” To which I respond, “Well… It’s true, you could say it’s like Marmite. That’s exactly what it is, and people either adore it or they can’t stand it.

Brendan observed that it could be quite ‘irritating for individuals’ and ‘struggles to comprehend’ regarding the viewer statistics.

Additionally, he maintained that he’s never made any statements that could tarnish the show’s reputation, since he never expected the series to run for this length of time.

He said: ‘Because why would you bother? But I have gone on to say, ‘Oh I love that, that is really f***ing good’.  When we do the mini series, this April, May It’ll be our 56th episode. I signed on for 18.’

Apart from its TV broadcasts, Mrs Brown’s Boys has embarked on numerous tours, performing in theaters and arenas across the nation.

Since 2013, the show has produced two spin-off films and annually returns with a special episode during holiday seasons, continuing its run of regular series.

2020 saw the BBC finalizing an agreement with Brendan, ensuring fresh Christmas specials up until at least 2026.

Notably, the well-known television personality often includes his relatives in his shows, where his spouse Jennifer Gibney portrays their on-screen daughter Cathy, and his sister Eilish takes on the role of his closest friend Winnie.

In addition, throughout its long-lasting duration, both his son Danny (aged 40) and daughter Fiona (aged 44) have made appearances on the popular Irish sitcom as well.

Last September, I was absolutely thrilled when Mrs. Brown’s Boys bagged their second straight Best Comedy award at the NTAs, outshining Ghosts in the very same category – a victory that made my heart skip a beat in 2023!

In 2013, 2014, and 2015, the show was awarded Best Comedy. The entire family gathered onstage to receive this honor.

Before receiving the award from stars Tyger Drew-Honey, Ramona Marquez, and Daniel Roache prior to their own Christmas special, Brendan graciously dedicated it to the faithful viewers who have supported them on television.

He said: ‘I wanna thank the audience who vote. We make it for you, so thank you very much for responding the way you did.
