Fans of actor Brendan Fraser, who was nearly unnoticeable in the 2022 A24 film “…“, can finally catch him in “The Whale” when it arrives on streaming platform Max on May 9. Notably, this role won the former “Mummy” star his first Academy Award.
Under the guidance of director Darren Aronofsky and scriptwriter Samuel D. Hunter, the movie titled “The Whale” focuses on Charlie, a solitary English teacher who is morbidly obese and confined to his home. Struggling with isolation, Charlie endeavors to mend his broken relationship with his daughter Ellie. Despite being made on a budget of just $3 million, the film managed to gross an impressive $57.6 million at the global box office.
Fraser Defends The Whale
The movie “The Whale” received an Oscar for its outstanding achievement in makeup and hairstyling. Yet, upon its release, it stirred up controversy. During a 2023 interview, it was discussed…
In a conversation, he said, “I appreciate those with differing opinions about the film’s goals. However, I don’t share their views because I believe there’s no malicious intent involved. I wanted to know if I – myself, Brendan – had inadvertently caused any harm. But the response from the Obesity Action Coalition was, ‘Continue with your work.’ In essence, we produced the film we intended to create, and I stand behind that decision.

Fraser on Not Calling his Costume a “Fat Suit”
Fraser clarified that while he used prosthetics for the part, he never called it a “fat suit.” He explained, “Dressing an actor in clothing and equipment to mimic weight gain for a character has often been a shortcut to authenticity over the years. What you usually get is the silhouette of an athletic actor, and it’s typically used for a cheap laugh or to stereotype a character.” Fraser further stated that he aimed to approach his role in “The Whale” with “professionalism, dedication, and thorough preparation.
As a movie enthusiast, I stand firm on my partnership with the Obesity Action Coalition to ensure authentic portrayal in ‘The Whale’. It’s clear to me that how we address obesity needs transformation, as it’s the last stronghold of unacceptable bias and discrimination. It’s high time we let go of this outdated mindset, especially considering our significant strides in numerous cultural aspects. I sincerely hope that this is one more box we can check off towards a more inclusive society.
As of now, The Whale boasts a 64% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, its audience score stands at an impressive 91%, suggesting that the movie is striking a chord with viewers. Notably, Brendan Fraser, who stars in The Whale, has recently secured roles in the 2023 film Killers of the Flower Moon and 2024’s Brothers.
The Whale will stream on Max starting May 9.
