Actor Brendan Fraser recently spoke about the cancelled DC film, three years after it was decided not to release it. Fraser had been cast as the villain, Firefly, and the movie was to star Leslie Grace as the main character.
Brendan Fraser recently spoke to the Associated Press about the cancellation of the “Batgirl” movie. He praised the effort put into the film and expressed disappointment that audiences won’t get to see it. Fraser feels the movie was treated like just a product and is especially sad that younger viewers will miss out on a different take on a superhero. Here’s what he had to say:
It was a massive production, filmed across four floors in Glasgow, and I was constantly visiting the art department just to see everything. It’s a shame because so many young girls are missing a hero they can truly relate to. Even Michael Keaton returned as Batman! But nowadays, entertainment feels more like a product than art, and it’s often more profitable to simply scrap projects and collect the insurance money than to actually release them. Honestly, we risk destroying the very thing we’re trying to create.
In the summer of 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery made the surprising decision to cancel the already-completed film Batgirl, using it as a way to reduce their taxes. This unusual move happened as the studio was trying to significantly cut costs. The cancellation received strong criticism from both audiences and people working in the film industry.
In early 2023, DC co-head Peter Safran revealed that the movie Batgirl wouldn’t be released. He explained that, despite costing around $90 million to make, the film wasn’t good enough and could have damaged the DC brand and the careers of those who worked on it.

The following month, Grace disputed claims about the film’s quality in an interview with Variety. She explained that the test screenings were shown a version that wasn’t finished, but the cut she had seen was actually quite good and promising.
The editing team hadn’t finished their work on the film when everything at the company fell apart. However, the footage I saw was really promising, and I think the finished movie could have been great.
The movie Batgirl was planned to bring back Michael Keaton as Batman, alongside J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. Other actors set to star included Ivory Aquino, Amarah Taylor, Jacob Scipio, and Ed Wade. While Keaton did return as Batman in The Flash (2023), that film wasn’t successful with either critics or audiences.
In November 2023, Warner Bros. faced criticism for initially canceling the film Coyote vs. Acme due to tax considerations. After public outcry, the company reversed its decision and allowed director Dave Green to find a new distributor for the live-action/animated movie. Coyote vs. Acme is now scheduled for release on August 28, 2026, by Ketchup Entertainment.
While Green’s film is finally being released, it appears the completed version of Batgirl will likely never be seen. A short clip of a fight scene did surface online earlier this year and received a good reaction. We might see more leaked footage in the future, offering a glimpse of what the finished film could have been.
