Brenda Blethyn’s new channel 4 revenge drama starring Harlan Coben actor gets first-look trailer

Channel 4 has released a sneak peek trailer for the new period drama A Woman of Substance, starring Brenda Blethyn, known for her role in Vera. The eight-episode series is Blethyn’s first television project since Vera concluded, and she’ll be playing one version of Emma Harte, a woman who rises from housemaid to successful businesswoman. Jessica Reynolds will portray the younger version of the character.

A longer trailer reveals both Blethyn and Reynolds portraying a woman described as a daughter, mother, lover, fighter, and a feminist icon of the 20th century who challenged societal expectations. The story follows Emma Harte, a determined but poor maid in 1911 Yorkshire, England, as she embarks on an incredible journey to become one of the wealthiest women in the world, ultimately living in a luxurious New York penthouse.

I’m completely hooked on this story! It follows a woman’s incredible journey through the 20th century, starting with nothing and working her way to the very top. Emma isn’t afraid to break the rules and fight against what everyone expects of her. She’s determined to succeed, no matter the obstacles, and she has a clear vision of what she wants – total success, and she’ll do whatever it takes to get there!

The show includes Harlan Coben‘s Stay Close, and features Jo Joyner, formerly of EastEnders, as Elizabeth Harte Ainsley. Her character’s betrayal is what sets Emma’s revenge plot in motion.

Blethyn and Reynold’s A Woman of Substance is a new adaptation of Barbara Taylor Bradford’s incredibly popular novel, which was first adapted for television over 40 years ago.

Channel 4’s original 1984 series, which earned an Emmy nomination, was their most successful drama ever. Now, they say this updated, fast-paced story of revenge feels just as powerful and important today as it did nearly forty years ago.

Actress Reynolds, who recently starred as Lady Christine in the historical drama House of Guinness, announced the completion of filming for A Woman of Substance with a selfie on Instagram. She wrote that after 19 weeks of shooting, she was saying goodbye to her character Emma, as well as Leeds, Yorkshire, and everyone she worked with. Reynolds expressed that the experience had a positive impact on her and she felt a strong connection with the people she met.

Then, in October, Channel 4 shared the first photos of Brenda Blethyn and Laurence Reynolds together as the new characters.

I’m so excited! Channel 4 just gave us a first peek at A Woman of Substance – it looks like a really gripping story about someone who goes from having nothing to everything, and it’s full of ambition, power struggles, and even revenge! It’s coming next year, and I can’t wait!

The newest version of the story was filmed in Yorkshire. Katherine Jakeways wrote the screenplay with Roanne Bardsley, and Samantha Harrie and Richard Senior jointly directed it. Charlie Palmer produced the series. Beth Willis, Joe Innes, George Faber, Katherine Jakeways, and The Barbara Taylor Bradford Trust were executive producers, with Roanne Bardsley serving as co-executive producer.

A Woman of Substance will air on Channel 4.
