“Breathtaking” drama from The Split boss that’s “close to perfect” gets new UK streaming home

The critically praised film Shame is now available to stream in the UK. Released in 2011, it stars Michael Fassbender as a man battling a hidden sex addiction. His struggle becomes more difficult when his sister, played by Carey Mulligan, comes to visit and forces him to face his problems.

After premiering on Film4 yesterday, the movie is now available to watch for free on Channel 4’s streaming service.

Abi Morgan, the writer behind The Split, created the series Shame, working with director Steve McQueen (Blitz) on the screenplay.

When it was first released, Digital Spy praised the film as “breathtaking,” describing it as a powerfully emotional and intense experience.

We said that while it can be a tough watch – similar to the intense film Requiem for a Dream – it’s a powerful movie that will stay with you long after it’s over.

The San Francisco Chronicle also lauded the film’s relaxed speed and beautiful visuals, noting that its structure is nearly flawless.

CinemaBlend praised Shame as a daring and emotionally powerful film, noting its strong direction, dedicated acting, and willingness to tackle difficult subjects.

The Guardian praised the film as thoughtful, well-made, and genuinely mature, calling it ‘the best kind of adult movie.’ Meanwhile, the New York Post labeled it a dark and artistic drama.

According to DVDTalk, Shame isn’t a movie you’d casually recommend for entertainment. However, it’s a powerful and absorbing film, and Steve McQueen’s unflinching honesty is commendable. The director never shies away from difficult scenes, even when the audience might prefer him to.

In addition to Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan, the film Shame also stars James Badge Dale (known for Iron Man 3), Nicole Beharie from The Morning Show, and Lucy Walters of Power.

Shame is streaming now on Channel 4 in the UK.
