Breaking Down the Ending of Virgin River Season 6
As a dedicated fan of the Virgin River series, I must say that the latest season has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride! The intertwining lives of these small-town residents keep me hooked, and the cliffhanger at the end of season 6 left me on the edge of my seat.
In its sixth season, the popular series “Virgin River” reached a long-awaited moment for fans since its debut in 2019: Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson) exchanged vows in the tenth episode. Their fairy tale wedding was relatively drama-free, with only a small hiccup when Mel’s father Everett (John Allen Nelson) couldn’t attend the ceremony due to being hospitalized. However, he showed up later at the reception to serenade her with a special song.
As a movie reviewer, let me share my thoughts on the captivating series, Virgin River. This small town, nestled amidst breathtaking landscapes, boasts a warm community and gossip that could rival any soap opera on television. After our beloved couple finally tied the knot, the drama escalated, leaving us hanging on the edge of our seats as the season came to an intense cliffhanger, with one character’s destiny left in limbo.
Doc’s medical license
At the onset of the new season, a celebration was held at the clinic for Dr. Tim Matheson, or Doc, marking his 30 years of service as a doctor in Virgin River. However, following a house call that hospitalized a patient, doubts were cast on Doc’s medical abilities by another physician. This sparked an investigation into his medical license, putting everything he had strived for at risk. In the final episode, his wife Hope (Annette O’Toole), who is also the mayor of the town, disclosed that a larger hospital network was considering expanding into Virgin River, which could jeopardize the future of Doc’s clinic. “This creates professional uncertainty for Doc in season seven,” explains Smith. “Moreover, it draws Hope into the picture as she aims to safeguard what matters most to her – Doc and the town’s reputation.
Lark drains Brady’s bank account
Throughout much of the season, character Elise Gatien (Lark) attempted to deceive boyfriend Ben Hollingsworth (Brady) into handing over all his funds. In truth, she was colluding with Ian Tracey’s character (Jimmy), who is also the father of her child and had gotten involved with local drug lord Calvin, leading him to be jailed. Fortunately, Zibby Allen’s character (Brie), Brady’s ex-girlfriend and Jack’s sister, coincidentally visited a client at the jail and spotted Jimmy conversing with Lark. This encounter prompted Brie to inform Brady about what she witnessed. Upon discovering that his girlfriend had been misleading him, Brady opted not to provide Lark with any money, which she claimed was for her ailing mother.
After Brady learns he can’t be with Brie (details to follow) and Lark discovers Brady’s true character, they choose to fully invest in their relationship. According to Smith, it’s a complex situation; if Brie weren’t present, Lark might have been an option for Brady. However, that isn’t the case, making things difficult. The complications deepen when Brady speaks with Brie at Mel and Jack’s wedding, leading them to confess their feelings. Unbeknownst to Brady, Lark is nearby and overhears their conversation. During the wedding, Brady gives Lark’s daughter his phone for a game. By the end of the night, Brady finds out that Lark and her daughter have left without him noticing. When he checks his bank account, all his money has vanished. Now, Smith predicts that Brady will seek explanations and contemplate how he treated Lark in the past as well as the potential future for both of them with Brie.
Brie tells Mike she cheated on him
Regarding Brie, Jack’s sister finds herself in a challenging situation. She has two suitors: Brady and Mike (Marco Grazzini). Smith explains that with Brady, there is intense emotion and intimacy, while with Mike, there is security, reliability, and comfort. Both aspects are significant in a relationship, but Brie finds herself stuck between receiving one aspect from one man and the other from another, unable to decide which route is ideal for her. As a result, she has to make some difficult choices. In season 6, she is content with Mike, but eventually ends up crossing that line with Brady.
In the final episode, following Mel and Jack’s wedding, Mike pops the question to Brie. However, she confesses to him that she had been unfaithful. Instead of being surprised, he tells her that he was already aware. The scene was filmed in two variations: one where Mike acknowledges knowing, and another where he doesn’t. Smith explains, “I watched the episode with some of the show’s writers who didn’t notice the added line because it wasn’t scripted. There were audible gasps from them, so we chose to use that version.
Mel and Jack’s adoption journey
Over the course of the series, Mel has been open about her journey to conceive a child, and this season, she and Jack were eagerly looking into adoption. Following their wedding, a patient of Mel’s, Marley (played by Rachel Drance), who is pregnant, approaches them. She reveals that the couple originally planning to adopt her baby are having second thoughts, and she proposes that Mel adopts the child instead.
For Smith, this situation was intriguing and thrilling to navigate. Prior to her wedding, Mel found it challenging to appreciate good events due to the hardships she’d experienced throughout her life. “I was intrigued by how her character would respond, especially after her fairy-tale wedding, when an opportunity she’s longed for in the series presented itself,” Smith explains. Despite yearning for a child, Marley’s proposal to Mel presents numerous complexities. On a moral ground, Marley is Mel’s patient. Additionally, Jack doesn’t know Marley at all.
Charmaine is MIA
This season, newly-minted mom Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) finds herself juggling not only her twin infants but also a precarious and perilous predicament. Calvin, the babies’ father, has been released from prison and seems intent on making Charmaine’s life difficult, going as far as endangering her well-being. On Mel and Jack’s wedding day, Charmaine was scheduled to style Mel’s hair, but she mysteriously failed to appear.
On the next day, Jack chooses to visit Charmaine’s residence to check if she’s alright. Upon arrival, he enters a room, his eyes widen, and the scene fades to darkness, leaving the audience hanging with a suspenseful ending.
Smith is keeping quiet about the details of what happened with Charmaine, but he’s excited about wrapping up the current season with that cliffhanger because he has a grand scheme in mind for season seven. He’s also pleased that viewers are interested in Charmaine, who used to be Mel’s main rival and a constant annoyance for Jack. As he puts it, “Historically, she was a divisive character.” But he’s happy that people care about her!
