Breaking Down the Ending of Netflix’s Twisty Mystery Thriller Missing You
As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for unraveling intricate plotlines and a soft spot for Harlan Coben adaptations, I must say that “Missing You” is a thrilling addition to Netflix’s roster of mystery series. With its gripping narrative and masterful performance by Rosalind Eleazar as the tenacious Kat Donovan, this limited series is a rollercoaster ride that keeps you guessing until the very end.
The plot twists are as surprising as they are satisfying, with each revelation building upon the last to create a web of deceit and betrayal that will leave you breathless. The setting change from New York City to Manchester adds a fresh perspective to an already captivating story, making it feel both familiar yet unique.
The ending, while tragic in its own way, offers a glimmer of hope and the potential for redemption. I must admit that I was left with a bittersweet feeling, much like savoring the last bite of a delectable meal. The cliffhanger leaves room for speculation about where Kat and Josh’s relationship might go from here, which is always a plus in my book.
In terms of humor, let me say that if you thought the plot was twisty, wait until you find out who the real villain of this story actually is – it’s none other than our own hearts, for leading us to invest time and emotions into these characters we’ve grown to love and hate in equal measure. And remember, as they say, “The heart wants what the heart wants, even if it means being left with a pinky-brush-against moment.”
All in all, “Missing You” is a must-watch for any fan of mystery thrillers, and I can’t wait to see what Harlan Coben and Netflix have up their sleeves next.
2023 marks the beginning of a fresh year, and along with it comes another Harlan Coben adaptation on Netflix. The success of last year’s release, “Fool Me Once”, has paved the way for the mystery thriller “Missing You” to swiftly climb up Netflix’s most-watched list in the days following its January 1st premiere, trailing only behind the new season of “Squid Game”.
The five-part limited series, adapted from Coben’s hit 2014 novel with the same title, shifts the narrative from New York City to Manchester. This gripping drama centers around detective Kat Donovan (Rosalind Eleazar), who finds herself drawn once more into the enigma surrounding her father’s murder, Clint Donovan (Lenny Henry). Her investigation takes a new turn when she comes across her former fiancé Josh’s (Ashley Walters) dating profile. Kat had assumed he vanished 11 years ago without explanation after the night career criminal Monte Leburne (Marc Warren) was implicated in her father’s death. However, as the story unfolds, she starts to uncover hidden truths about both events.
Following the assignment of a missing persons case concerning Rudi Dharmalingam (Rishi Migari) and subsequently Lisa Faulkner’s character, Dana Fells, Kat pays a visit to terminally ill Monte in prison, uncovering that he was bribed to falsely confess to Clint’s murder. After being temporarily suspended from the force due to her superior, Stagger (Richard Armitage), discovering she had accessed Monte through non-official routes, Kat persists in unraveling the truth behind her father, Josh, and the peculiar disappearances at hand. This investigation eventually leads to a string of astounding revelations that have the potential to overturn everything Kat believed about the people within her circle.
“She keeps having one revelation after another, leaving her no chance to catch her breath.” He added that we often wish she would pause, gather her thoughts, and then continue. However, she never does. She’s constantly moving without a moment to consider the traumatic experiences she’s been through or is still experiencing.
How does Missing You end?
As a cinephile, I’ve come to realize that the enchanting profile of ‘Josh’ was nothing more than a clever ruse orchestrated by the same nefarious crime ring that has been linked to the mysterious disappearances of Rishi and Dana. This sinister organization exploits dating apps as a means to entice affluent singles, kidnap them, and demand every last cent they possess. However, the genuine Josh is still in the picture, and it appears he did indeed play a role in Clint’s untimely demise.
In the end, it’s revealed that Kat’s police officer father wasn’t just secretly allied with crime boss Calligan (James Nesbitt), but he was also involved in a long-term extramarital relationship – not with another woman, but with Parker (Cyril Nri), a man whom he deeply loved. This relationship was being used by Calligan to exert control over Clint, forcing him to work for him. As a result, Clint had chosen to end things with Parker.
The evening Clint perished, Aqua (Mary Malone), a friend of Kat’s and roommate of Josh, observed Clint and Parker in an affectionate hug on the street. This encounter caused Clint to frantically contact Stagger for Aqua’s address and follow her home. Upon reaching her residence, Clint found Aqua receiving a call from Kat, which led him to become violent towards Aqua. In self-defense, Aqua grabbed a knife, but Clint overpowered her. At that instant, Josh returned home, joining the altercation unknowingly and inadvertently stabbing Clint. As Clint lay dying, Stagger arrived and persuaded everyone to conceal the truth about the incident to protect Kat and her mother from learning about Clint’s actions. To maintain this facade, Stagger and Josh arranged for Monte, who was facing a life sentence, to take the blame, and Josh decided to leave town due to his guilt over Clint’s death.
Yet, despite no longer being together, Josh continued to cherish Kat deeply. When he ultimately confided in her everything, the series concluded with a tearful Kat tenderly touching his pinky finger. “It’s quite touching to see her reaching for him at the end,” Eleazar stated to Tudum. “I believe there are several interpretations one could draw from this moment.
