Breaking Down the Dramatic Season 3 Finale of The Traitors
In the penultimate episode of Season 3 of The Traitors, a nail-biting cliffhanger left viewers guessing if Britney Haynes, who had recently been indoctrinated as a traitor, had betrayed fellow traitor and former Big Brother contestant Danielle Reyes. The opening moments of the finale finally unveiled the outcome of the tiebreaker vote at the round table.
For the first time in the American adaptation of “The Traitors,” a draw occurred at the roundtable, an event unprecedented in the game’s history. With only six players left, this stalemate happened at a critical juncture when the consequences couldn’t have been more significant. In the initial vote, opinions were divided between Reyes and Lord Ivar Mountbatten, a member of the extended British royal family. Dylan Efron (Zac Efron’s brother) and former Bachelorette Gabby Windey supported Reyes, while they, along with Mountbatten, targeted him. On the other hand, Reyes, Haynes, and Real Housewife Dolores Catania aimed their votes at Mountbatten. This resulted in a deadlock, leading to a tiebreaker vote that excluded both Reyes and Mountbatten.
As the game’s lone vote-changer, I found myself in a pivotal position, ultimately banishing Reyes from the competition. With her divisive presence throughout this season, her exit was a significant turning point for those who had been against her all along. However, it’s important to acknowledge that despite the criticism she faced for her dramatic performances and seemingly dubious gameplay strategies, Reyes managed to survive longer than any other original traitor in the game. Love her or loathe her, it was clear that her tactics kept her in the running for the majority of the show. In the aftermath of her departure, Catania aptly summed up the general sentiment, stating, “I even told Danielle herself, ‘If you’re a traitor, you need to win an Oscar. The way you acted and convulsed on the floor after they voted Carolyn [Wiger] out.’
In the closing stage, it was up to the remaining five contestants to see this competition through to the end. Earlier on, host Alan Cumming had clarified that unlike previous seasons, those reaching the finale wouldn’t disclose whether they were traitors during their elimination. As a result, the loyal ones faced an anxious challenge ahead. To add to the intrigue, it was unveiled in the last episode that Haynes possessed the Power of the Seer advantage. This meant she could pick one player who would be compelled to reveal their true allegiance – faithful or traitor.
Haynes decided to play her advantage against Windey, honestly informing the group that Windey was loyal. She reasoned that if she had lied and claimed Windey was a traitor, it would only heighten suspicion towards herself. However, Efron had already caught on to her strategy, and after a final mission boosting their winnings to $204,300, tensions between Efron and Haynes escalated at the final roundtable. Despite a strong rebuttal from Haynes, everyone ultimately supported Efron, the epitome of loyalty, leading to Haynes’ expulsion from the group.
The last four loyal players managed to expel all the traitors from the competition. However, there was a question: could they rely on each other enough to assume they were all genuine about their loyalty? In essence, yes. Although the game tried to build suspense with votes like “Banish Again” or “End Game”, the plot had mostly reached its climax by that stage. Instead, the loyal four decided to complete the game collectively and share the winnings equally. This marked the highest number of loyal players who emerged victorious in the history of the game.
Based on your expectations, it could be seen as either a victory for truth and honor, or an underwhelming result. Regardless, one fact remains: Survivor Queen Cirie Fields, who won Season 1, is the sole individual to have manipulated and deceived her way to victory in the American version of Traitors. Here’s to hoping that in Season 4, we see more traitors who collaborate to eliminate the loyalists, instead of undermining each other.
