Breaking Down the Captain America: Brave New World End-Credits Scene

In a break from Marvel’s usual pattern, “Captain America: Brave New World” is the studio’s first movie release after over half a year, marking one of the longest breaks between films. Yet, surprisingly, this installment only has one post-credits scene, but it’s significant as it lays the groundwork for future events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The closing credits of “Captain America: Brave New World” hint at the already-announced 2027 film, “Avengers: Secret Wars.

In a revised and simplified manner: Captain America, portrayed by Anthony Mackie, pays a visit to Samuel Sterns, a villainous character played by Tim Blake Nelson, who is imprisoned on the Raft. Sterns has an unusually big brain due to contact with Bruce Banner’s gamma-irradiated blood, something you might not recall from the 2008 movie “The Incredible Hulk.” His ability, while not spectacular, allows him to predict probabilities, making him somewhat like the election needle of a New York newspaper.

In a foreboding speech, Sterns implies that it’s plausible there are multiple universes like ours. “Don’t you wonder if you’re alone? Don’t you ponder if this is the only world?” he muses. “We shall discover when we must safeguard it from others.

It’s becoming increasingly apparent that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is moving towards a multiverse confrontation. The team we know as the Avengers, who disbanded after decades of action following Harrison Ford’s character Thaddeus Ross urging Captain America to form a new super-team, will likely face off against Avenger teams from alternate realities. Prepare yourself for Captain America facing off against another iteration of himself.

For quite some time, Marvel has been subtly hinting at the storyline for their upcoming movie in 2027 titled “Avengers: Secret Wars“. This film is inspired by a comic book series focusing on the catastrophic merging of all alternative realities. The resulting world, referred to as “Battleworld”, serves as a battleground where heroes and villains from different timelines within the Marvel Cinematic Universe engage in fierce conflicts against each other.

The plotline marks a significant shift for the comics and potentially for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films. This change could open doors for new actors to step into iconic roles, such as Michael B. Jordan possibly portraying an alternate Black Panther. Characters that were previously exclusive to other branches of the MCU universe may now join this one, including the Fantastic Four and X-Men. Excitingly, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is set to debut this summer, while Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine recently returned to the MCU in 2024’s blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine. These films take place in separate timelines that could collide with Captain America’s world. Additionally, some retired MCU actors may make a comeback, with Robert Downey Jr. set to reappear as the villain Doctor Doom, presumably through some parallel universe events.

For Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) followers, the concept that alternate universes exist and that the Avengers could potentially battle heroes or villains from those realms is far from a groundbreaking disclosure—at least not for Captain America, given his experience with time-travel. After all, numerous MCU characters have already traversed timelines.

In the movie “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, Doctor Strange created a passageway, bringing together several Spider-Men from diverse dimensions to join Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Later on, Strange traveled across different universes and ran into various iterations of himself in the film named “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness“. Meanwhile, Ant-Man encountered a nemesis called Kang in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania“, who was engaged in conflicts with numerous versions of himself from various timeframes.

Isn’t it common for these superheroes to exchange messages about such information? Didn’t Doctor Strange inform his powerful associates that there might be malicious doppelgangers lurking around? Didn’t Ant-Man send a quick message to the other Avengers, just saying, “Hey, I met an odd and frightening character who hinted at countless universes harboring terrifying counterparts of himself?

In the face of this challenging parallel universe threat, it’s crucial for us, the Avengers, to regroup and re-establish our team dynamics. As per the instructions given by now disgraced President Ross in a new phase, Captain America is tasked with reviving our superhero squad in this fresh world. Perhaps the words of this seemingly insignificant supervillain will spark the determination within the new Captain to take up this challenge. Without a doubt, the likelihood that we, the Avengers, will reunite and stand together again is high.
