Few things generate as much buzz around a TV show’s finale as a compelling cliffhanger. That’s precisely what Netflix has done with the final episode of its new limited series, Vladimir, which is available to stream now.
The series Vladimir, created by Julia May Jonas (who also wrote the 2022 novel it’s based on), follows a college English professor in her fifties (Rachel Weisz) who develops a strong obsession with Vladimir Vladinski (Leo Woodall), a charismatic young novelist recently hired by her department. The title Vladimir is thought to be a reference to Vladimir Nabokov, author of Lolita, a connection Jonas has hinted at. She explained that she wanted to name the series after the object of the obsession, but from a woman’s point of view, flipping the traditional narrative.
The story follows a woman as she falls deeply in love, at the same time her husband, John, faces a public scandal. John, a university department chair who has been suspended, is accused of sexual misconduct by former students. While John and his wife have an open marriage and he maintains any past relationships were consensual, the students allege he abused his position of power. The situation unfolds alongside a Title IX investigation.
She believes the students willingly participated and is annoyed by their complaints, feeling the current focus on power dynamics is excessive. She’s also upset that her husband’s actions are damaging her position and reputation at the college. As his disciplinary hearing approaches, she grows increasingly irritated by his efforts to fix things. During an argument, she admits she only agreed to an open relationship because she already suspected he was being unfaithful.
As the main character grows closer to Vladimir, she rediscovers her passion for writing, something she hasn’t felt in years. After a disappointing second novel followed her successful debut, she’d stopped writing altogether. But meeting Vladimir sparks a creative urge, and she begins working on a new book. According to Rachel Weisz, her character is drawn to Vladimir because he genuinely takes an interest in her work, asking thoughtful questions others don’t. While his good looks are a bonus, it’s his personality—his kindness and the way he makes her feel noticed—that truly captivates her.
How does Vladimir end?

After seeing John and Vladimir’s wife, Cynthia, together in a way that made her suspect an affair, the protagonist asks Vladimir to lunch, hoping to avoid attending John’s hearing. She then encourages him to drink heavily, eventually convincing him to spend the afternoon at her lake house. Once there, her behavior becomes increasingly aggressive. She eventually drugs his drink, ties him up after he falls asleep, and uses his phone to send a false text message to Cynthia, claiming he knows about their alleged affair.
He wakes up startled and claims they’d just had too much to drink, suggesting that’s how the current situation began, and that he wanted to be controlled. She then shares what she knows about John and Cynthia, and tries to explain it away by saying she originally told him the information while they were both intoxicated. He asks to stay the night, and they sleep together the next evening. Soon after, John arrives at the cabin and finds them. When Vladimir questions him about Cynthia, John claims they were just using drugs and working on their writing together. This angers Vladimir, who was under the impression that Cynthia was sober, and he attacks John.
As Vladimir is reaching Cynthia by phone, John tells the main character that the college has dropped its complaints. He suggests they reconsider their open marriage and try to strengthen their relationship. Meanwhile, Vladimir is interested in continuing their affair.
That night, the cabin caught fire because of two space heaters. While trying to escape, the main character ran back inside to save her handwritten manuscript. She made it out the front door, but the two other men were trapped because the back door was broken.
Watching her finally safe, she gave the camera this knowing little smile and started to tell me what she claimed happened next. She said she finally finished writing her book – it’s about a woman completely consumed by her feelings for a younger coworker. Apparently, Vlad wrote a book too, about a sweet romance with an older professor. But hers, she admitted with a bit of satisfaction, was the one people really connected with, the one that resonated. And thankfully, she quickly added, she did call 911, and everyone managed to get out okay.
It’s simply up to you whether you believe her or not.
Is the show different from the book?

Like the fire at the cabin in Jonas’ novel, a fire also occurs in this story, but its consequences are quite different. After John admits his troubled past with Cynthia – revealing it wasn’t a real affair and involved drug use – Vladimir decides to go for a late-night kayak ride to think things through. Meanwhile, John and the main character go to sleep.
Suddenly, Vladimir was pulling her from the burning cabin. He managed to save both her and John, though they suffered serious burns. After months of recovery, they found a sort of stability together, largely because their injuries made it difficult to do anything else. Despite hoping for a fresh start, she realized she was back in the same situation as before. Meanwhile, Vlad published a new, unremarkable novel inspired by their experience, filled with unsettling descriptions focusing on the effects of aging.
The episode’s writer, Jonas, subtly references the show’s last-minute changes in the final conversation between the main character and John. After she explains that finishing her novel could give her a fresh start and more control over her life, John asks if she’s coming to bed, and she replies with uncertainty.
“Not a fan of how it finished?” he asked with a playful tone. Now, there are two possible endings, and it’s up to the audience to choose which one they prefer.
