Bryan Cranston’s portrayal of Walter White in Breaking Bad remains incredibly popular even years after the show ended. Similar to James Gandolfini’s iconic role in The Sopranos, some performances become so strongly associated with an actor that it’s difficult to imagine them playing anything else. Because viewers grew to intensely dislike Cranston’s character, “Heisenberg,” many have hesitated to watch his later work. However, one series deserves attention, as it offers Cranston another challenging role and delivers a similar level of suspense.
In December 2020, Showtime premiered Your Honor, starring Bryan Cranston, along with Isiah Whitlock Jr., Michael Stuhlbarg, and Hunter Doohan. The show was inspired by the Israeli series Kvodo. Cranston’s portrayal of Walter White in the early seasons of Breaking Bad showed him as a typical family man who, after receiving a cancer diagnosis, desperately tried to provide for his family’s future. The series then followed his transformation into a powerful drug lord controlling a criminal empire.
Like Breaking Bad, Your Honor features Bryan Cranston playing a character who will go to any lengths to defend his family. This time, he’s Michael Desiato, a New Orleans judge. However, his attempts to protect his son lead to illegal actions that attract the attention of a dangerous local mob boss, putting both of them in serious danger.
Quick Decisions Bring Massive Consequences
Okay, so I just watched the premiere of Your Honor, and it immediately throws you into a really intense moral dilemma. We meet Michael, a judge who clearly feels things deeply and tries to be fair, but his world gets turned upside down when his son, Adam, is involved in a hit-and-run on the anniversary of his mother’s death. It’s bad enough that someone was hit, but when Adam confesses to his dad, Michael realizes the victim’s father is none other than Jimmy Baxter, a major mob boss in New Orleans. Seeing that connection, Michael doesn’t take his son to the police as he initially intended; instead, he’s overcome by a desperate need to protect Adam and starts down a path of covering up the accident. It’s a gripping start, and it sets up a seriously complicated situation where doing the ‘right’ thing feels impossible.
This is a difficult situation for everyone involved. Viewers feel for Adam, who made a mistake with devastating consequences, and for Michael, who desperately tried to protect his son, even if it meant going against his own principles. Surprisingly, many can also understand Jimmy Baxter’s grief over losing his son, despite his past actions as a crime boss. It’s a tragedy that resonates on multiple levels.
Crime, Conflict, and Compromises

Showtime
Originally planned as a short, one-season show, Your Honor unexpectedly returned for a second season after its popular first season finale left viewers on a cliffhanger. Both seasons explore the complex character of Michael Desiato, played by Bryan Cranston, who, much like his iconic Walter White, draws the audience in while simultaneously making them question his choices. Throughout the series, Michael’s moral compass shifts, increasingly mirroring the behavior of the man he’s trying to protect, Jimmy Baxter, who in turn reveals a surprisingly devoted family side.
