Breaking Amish Star Mama Mary Schmucker Passes Away at 65 After Brave Cancer Battle

Sadly, Breaking Amish’s Mama Mary Schmucker passed away at the age of 65, after a tough two-year fight against colon cancer which eventually spread throughout her body.

In 2012, Mama Mary gained widespread recognition through the reality show “Breaking Amish.” Later, she became a part of its sequel titled “Return To Amish,” sharing screen time with her son Abe and daughter-in-law Rebecca.

It has been verified by her son, Andrew Schmucker, that Mary passed away at home in Pennsylvania on Friday, following a short stay at the hospital earlier in the week.

Informally, Andrew mentioned that Mary’s entire family had learned about the recent news through TMZ, as he headed back home to Pennsylvania from Arkansas.

In April 2022, Mary had a colon operation, and she was reassured that all the cancer was removed. However, unfortunately, in June, she learned that her condition had advanced to stage three.

By last November, Rebecca disclosed that Mary was under hospice care and had been struggling so severely with eating that she was unable to retain any food.

Initially, Mary gained widespread recognition through the TLC show “Breaking Amish,” which aired from 2012 to 2014, followed by its sequel series “Return To Amish” that was broadcast from 2014 to 2013.

The series depicted the lives of individuals from Amish and Mennonite societies, who were grappling with the pull between contemporary culture and their deeply rooted traditions.

Among the main characters, Abe and Rebecca stand out. It was through their interactions that Mary, being Abe’s mother, gained favor with the audience.

In March 2022, a month prior to disclosing her colon cancer diagnosis, Mary made known her decision to depart from the show “Return To Amish.

I took to a Tupperware sales group on Facebook back in April of 2022, sharing a personal and challenging update about my health. I mentioned that I had been diagnosed with colon cancer and was scheduled for surgery later in the same month. This news was reported by In Touch Weekly.

In two days, a friend posted in our group: “I spoke with Mary this morning. She mentioned that the doctor believes he successfully removed all of her cancer! She will be returning home today!

By June, it was revealed in the group that Mary’s cancer had advanced to stage three, and she was planning to seek a second medical opinion.

She remembered that when she had her surgery, they told her they had removed all the cancer. Two weeks afterwards, they phoned her urgently and requested her to come back immediately.

She mentioned: “Now it’s been explained to me that my cancer is at stage three, very close to stage four. Chemotherapy won’t be effective for stage four cancer. So, what’s the point of undergoing chemotherapy?

Despite assuring her friends that she wasn’t backing down from the struggle just yet, she penned: “On the contrary, I won’t simply accept their assertions; I’m seeking a second professional opinion.

In November last, Rebecca shared a picture of her mother-in-law on Instagram accompanied by a deeply moving account of her health situation.

Rebecca asked for a prayer, as her mother hasn’t been well over the past few weeks. She’s experiencing difficulty in keeping food down and finding it hard to eat.

‘Currently, she is under hospice care. Her condition has been quite painful, but they are doing their best to alleviate it. If possible, please shower her with uplifting messages and send your prayers for her comfort and freedom from pain. I appreciate your kindness!’ said Mary’s daughter-in-law.
