Brandy and Monica reunite for ‘The Boy Is Mine’ tour, 27 years later

The once-clashing R&B songstresses Brandy and Monica are back — together.

On Tuesday, it was announced that the titans would embark on their inaugural joint tour titled “The Boy Is Mine,” a tribute to their 1998 hit song of the same name. Along the tour, Kelly Rowland, Muni Long and Jamal Roberts, the latest winner of American Idol, are set to make special appearances.

Brandy expressed in an interview with Variety, “This feels like coming full circle.” She and Monica reuniting isn’t solely about the music; it’s about acknowledging our past and the progress we’ve made. ‘The Boy Is Mine’ played a significant role in R&B, and performing together after all these years goes beyond a reunion – it’s a tribute to growth, sisterhood, and the unwavering love our fans have shown us since day one.

She also mentioned that she is aware of the ongoing affection for “The Boy Is Mine”, expressing that this song holds immense significance for her.

After debuting, the song held the top position for 13 consecutive weeks. This happened 27 years ago, but despite following separate paths since then, the duo have reunited to deliver “what the fans have long been requesting”.

“God’s timing perfectly aligned us,” Brandy said.

The pre-sale for the tour kicks off on June 26, while regular tickets will be available from June 27 onwards. At present, there’s one concert scheduled in the Los Angeles region on November 9 at the Kia Forum.

In 1998, Brandy and Monica experienced a highly-publicized dispute. It’s rumored that before they went on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards to perform their popular song, Monica reportedly struck Brandy in the face.

The pair was regarded as a formidable duo of ’90s musical prowess, as Brandy and Monica were both widely praised for their successful debut albums. At only 15, Brandy had already earned RIAA platinum certification with her self-titled album from 1994. “The Boy Is Mine,” released four years after that, became an immediate success. However, the VMAs disagreement appeared to foster tension between them.

Simultaneously continuing her journey within the music industry, Brandy additionally delved into acting starting from 1997 when she landed the role of Cinderella, making her the first African-American actress to do so. Most recently, she portrayed a rapper in the ABC drama series “Queens” which premiered in 2021.

Monica first burst onto the scene in 1995 with her debut album “Miss Thang,” which went platinum when she was just 14 years old. However, after releasing “Code Red” in 2015, the singer mostly stayed out of the limelight. In 2022, Monica hinted at a shift towards country music with the album “Open Roads,” which she claims was entirely produced by ten-time Grammy winner Brandi Carlile. Although she announced its completion in 2023, the album has not yet been made available to the public.

Following the dispute in 1998, it wasn’t until 2012 that Brandy and Monica teamed up once more to produce “It All Belongs to Me,” and another eleven years elapsed before they collaborated again on a remix of “The Boy Is Mine” for Ariana Grande. In the year 2021, these two musical powerhouses faced off in “Verzuz,” a widely acclaimed webcast series created by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland, where artists showcase their greatest hits against each other.

The interaction continued without any issues for nearly half an hour, but then Monica mentioned that she had traveled far from her past of breaking down doors and beating up women. This appeared to be a personal reference from her popular song “So Gone.

“You sure was,” Brandy replied. “I was one of the ones.”

But Monica refuted the quip, claiming, “People think I’m abusive. That’s not what happened.”

Following some discussion, Brandy admitted, “I apologize, I should not have said it … I had no intention of being disrespectful with that comment.

Monica explained, “It was just a misinterpretation,” then continued, as it appeared both musicians had also brushed off the news about their upcoming tour.
