As a huge fantasy fan, I’m so excited! Brandon Sanderson, the author behind some seriously amazing books, is finally seeing his work adapted for the screen. He just gave us an update on how things are going with bringing his Cosmere universe to life, and honestly, it’s a really cool time to be a fan!
Brandon Sanderson had previously said his novels weren’t suitable for streaming adaptations, but he’s reconsidered. He’s now partnering with a studio to create a TV series based on The Stormlight Archive, and he recently shared on YouTube that the planned Mistborn film is also moving forward.
I was so excited to hear the author give an update on the screenplay! They said it’s currently at ‘Bing! 13%,’ which sounds like things are really moving forward. They also shared that they’ve been making progress and were even getting feedback from the creative team at Apple this week. It’s great to see it all coming together!
Brandon Sanderson Detailed His Mistborn Progress
Sanderson explained that he’s been getting input from others on the project, asking them what they’d like to see happen. He hasn’t finished writing it yet, but their feedback is helping him develop the story’s outline – which, in Hollywood terms, is called a ‘treatment’ – before he starts the full screenplay.
The author confirmed, “Everything’s going well with that.”
Sanderson expects to finish the project by summer, though the process will take time. He anticipates multiple revisions and may need to switch to other work in between. Despite this, he’s pleased with the progress and optimistic about the outcome.
Brandon Sanderson Finally Agreed to Adapt His Novels
Just last year, in February 2025, bestselling fantasy author Brandon Sanderson revealed he’d been approached about turning his popular book series, The Stormlight Archive, into a TV show. Now, that adaptation is officially happening.
He mentioned receiving excellent job offers from people he admired, but he declined them because he didn’t think it was the right moment to focus on the Stormlight Archive project.
He mentioned a few fantasy series with promise that ultimately didn’t succeed. He specifically pointed to Rings of Power and Wheel of Time, saying they hadn’t lived up to expectations. Shadow and Bone also disappointed, only lasting two seasons despite a strong start. He believes streaming services are still struggling to get epic fantasy right.
Look, as a huge fan of the series, I was really interested to hear what Brandon Sanderson had to say about it all back in May 2025. He basically said the fans deserved a better adaptation, and honestly, I agree! It’s easy to forget he actually finished the books after Robert Jordan passed away in 2007, but he’s admitted he wasn’t a big part of how the TV show came together.
This arrangement helped Sanderson gain valuable experience. His new deal with Apple TV gives him an unusual level of creative control over how his books are adapted – even more control than George R.R. Martin had with Game of Thrones. Sanderson will not only write and produce the series, but he’ll also have final approval on all related projects.
Apple TV’s Brandon Sanderson adaptations don’t have a release date yet.
