Brandon Sanderson releases his first picture book for kids: The Most Boring Book Ever

As a seasoned gamer and avid reader, I’ve traversed through countless fantastical realms, from the gritty streets of Westeros to the towering spires of Roshar. Yet, none has prepared me for the unique adventure that Brandon Sanderson and Kazu Kibuishi have crafted in “The Most Boring Book Ever“.

Brandon Sanderson is a highly acclaimed fantasy writer renowned for series such as Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive, and he completed Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. When he isn’t setting new standards on Kickstarter, he’s always seeking out fresh realms to dominate. In a recent collaboration with graphic novelist Kazu Kibuishi, they released their first picture book titled The Most Boring Book Ever, which is aimed at children and marks Kibuishi’s foray into this genre. Given Sanderson’s reputation, it’s expected that they will make quite an impact in no time. Check out the trailer for the book above!

Titled as “The Least Exciting Book You’ll Ever Read“, this book, now available in stores, follows a young lad as he embarks on an ordinary afternoon filled with chores and homework. However, things take an extraordinary twist when he encounters dragons, pirates, and other fantastical elements. Sanderson penned the narrative while Kubuishi lent his artistic talent to the illustrations.

It seems that the title “The Most Boring Book Ever” is intentionally ironic; rest assured, it’s not intended to be a tedious read. As Brandon Sanderson clarified on TikTok, the core concept of the book is that the text contrasts with the images, with the words describing mundane events and the pictures transforming them into something extraordinary.

That’s an impressively inventive concept for a children’s book. Given Sanderson’s prolific creativity, it’s not surprising at all.

Apart from what’s been dubbed as “The Most Dull Book Ever,” Sanderson is set to publish the fifth installment in his highly acclaimed “Stormlight Archive” series, titled “Wind and Truth,” later this year. Sanderson boasts a rich collection of series, but “The Stormlight Archive” is frequently hailed as his masterpiece, making this upcoming release particularly significant. It’s shaping up to be another busy year for one of the most productive fantasy authors currently active.

Sanderson is quite the contrast to George R.R. Martin, as he’s been focused on a single book, “The Winds of Winter,” for over a decade, intermittently releasing other works like “Fire & Blood.” On the other hand, Sanderson’s output is so frequent that it’s challenging to keep pace. If you find yourself more attuned to Martin’s pace, there’s currently a sale on a collection of his work.
