Brandon Sanderson announces The Wheel of Time leatherbound editions from Dragonsteel and Tor Books

As an avid fantasy book enthusiast with a penchant for beautifully crafted leatherbound editions of my favorite series, I can hardly contain my excitement about Brandon Sanderson and Dragonsteel Books’ latest endeavor – the deluxe leatherbound edition of Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time. Having spent countless hours immersed in both these authors’ worlds, it feels like a dream come true to see Sanderson’s publishing company taking on this project.

This week is a significant one for fans of fantasy literature, as excitement levels have just escalated. Currently, author Brandon Sanderson and his company Dragonsteel are hosting their annual convention, Dragonsteel Nexus. Held in Salt Lake City, Utah from December 5 to December 7, this fan convention honors Sanderson’s literary works alongside those of other creatives within the fantasy and science fiction genres. Year upon year, it continues to grow, but with Sanderson launching “Wind and Truth,” the fifth book in his epic fantasy series, The Stormlight Archive, and one of his most crucial books to date, this weekend promises an even more extraordinary experience.

It’s only appropriate that this year’s Dragonsteel event is bringing some significant revelations, not all confined to Sanderson’s Cosmere universe. Kicking off at Dragonsteel Nexus, Sanderson unveiled an exciting development: his publishing house, Dragonsteel Books, will soon release a new line of deluxe leatherbound editions for none other than Robert Jordan’s legendary fantasy series, The Wheel of Time, which he completed following the author’s demise.

Sanderson expressed that he aimed to provide “The Wheel of Time” with the quality it merits. His intention was to release a new book each year, ensuring completion of the entire series, while simultaneously striving for the finest deluxe edition available.

Dragonsteel, Sanderson’s publishing company, is renowned for crafting high-quality leatherbound editions of his works such as ‘Mistborn’, ‘The Stormlight Archive’, and many others. These editions have been warmly welcomed by readers thus far. It seems a natural progression for Dragonsteel to extend this service to other series, given Sanderson’s personal ties to ‘The Wheel of Time’.

In addition, Sanderson displayed some of the chapter opening illustrations from “The Eye of the World“. The symbols that initiate each chapter are deeply etched in the minds of many fans of the “Wheel of Time” series. These new editions will retain these glyphs, yet they will be updated with more intricate designs to complement the deluxe format better. Sanderson also hinted at “all new artwork” in the leatherbound versions, unveiling a few stunning concept art pieces.

Sanderson stated that we’re putting maximum effort into crafting the most extraordinary leather-bound ‘Wheel of Time’ books that your imagination can conceive.

I wholeheartedly trust his words. Sanderson was an ardent fan of “The Wheel of Time” even before he became an author; he has often shared the tale of his transformation from a die-hard fan to the author selected to complete “The Wheel of Time.” Given this background, it seems appropriate that his company is spearheading what promises to be the most stunning editions of “The Wheel of Time” yet. He appears quite enthusiastic about these new leatherbounds, which is reassuring as they seem destined to live up to their expectations.

The Eye of the World leatherbound edition releases in Winter 2025

These “Wheel of Time” leather-bound editions are collaborative efforts between Dragonsteel Books and Tor Books, the publishing company responsible for “The Wheel of Time” series in the U.S., as well as many of Brandon Sanderson’s adult fantasy novels. This project has been under development for at least three years, tracing back to when Sanderson presented the concept to Robert Jordan’s widow and editor, Harriet McDougal.

The hardcover version of “The Eye of the World” is planned to be released in Winter 2025. Unlike previous Wheel of Time books, Dragonsteel will not organize a crowdfunding campaign; instead, they’ll become available for regular pre-order as the release date nears. Additionally, Dragonsteel has created a new newsletter where you can subscribe to receive updates about the production process for “The Eye of the World” leatherbound edition.
