As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve seen countless remasters and re-releases of classic games, some that soared like eagles and others that… well, let’s just say they didn’t quite make it off the ground. The latest addition to this rollercoaster ride is Braid, Anniversary Edition, a game that, according to its creator Jonathan Blow, has been selling like hotcakes in a town with no appetite for pancakes.


As a passionate gamer, I must share my thoughts about Jonathan Blow’s recent remarks on the sales performance of “Braid, Anniversary Edition.” This beautifully crafted remaster of the 2008 puzzle-platformer, which I personally adore, seems to have underperformed in sales, according to its creator. In his own words, he described it as selling “like dog shit.” While this may not be the most flattering comparison, it’s clear that he’s disappointed with the game’s commercial success.

As a gamer, I didn’t expect our remastered game to sell a million copies on its first day like a brand-new game would. The hype level for a remaster isn’t the same as for a fresh release. But we just have to wait and see how it performs, that was what I mentioned during one of my Twitch streams in May, shortly after our game hit the shelves (as reported by VGC).

After approximately a month since the launch of Braid, Anniversary Edition on June 17th, developer Jon Blow shared insights into the game’s sales figures. He commented that despite an initial pre-order discount and favorable reviews, including our enthusiastic review, the game didn’t sell well.

According to Blow, whether something is considered well-selling depends on one’s personal standards. For instance, if you compare it to classic games such as Jeff Minter’s Steam release or Atari 50, then it has been selling quite well. However, when compared to what the company needs for survival, it’s still not performing very well, which is equivalent to saying it’s sold like poor quality goods.

As a dedicated gamer, I must confess, things aren’t looking too bright for Thekla Inc right now. The lackluster performance of Braid, Anniversary Edition hasn’t been great, and I’ve got to say, the sales have been downright abysmal. It seems like consoles sales for this game are no more. I hope they can turn things around, as I’d love to see more innovative games from them in the future.

As someone who has spent over a decade working within the entertainment industry, I can confidently say that Blow’s statement about the entire industry struggling is not an understatement at all. In fact, my personal experiences have shown me that the challenges faced by artists, producers, and creators are far more severe than he might suggest with his choice of words. The relentless pursuit of perfection, the constant pressure to innovate, and the ever-shifting landscape of consumer preferences make for a life that is anything but easy. It’s a testament to the resilience and determination of those who choose this path that they continue to push forward amidst such adversity.
