Bradley Cooper’s new comedy-drama inspired by John Bishop’s life lands near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating

Bradley Cooper’s latest film, the comedy-drama *Is This Thing On?*, is receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie, inspired by the real life of John Bishop, tells the story of a divorced man, played by Will Arnett, who decides to try his hand at stand-up comedy.

Cooper not only directed the film, but also co-wrote the screenplay with Will Arnett and Mark Chappell. He also appears in the movie, playing Arnett’s best friend, alongside co-stars Laura Dern and Andra Day.

Despite being set in New York, the film Is This Thing On? was actually inspired by Bishop himself, as he revealed after posting the trailer on Instagram.

Man, I’m so hyped! After a long time working on it, the movie about my life – how I got into comedy and my relationship with Mel – is almost here! It’s gonna be a really funny and honest story about love, and I can’t wait for you all to see it.

Comedian Chloe Radcliffe, who also acts in the movie, revealed where the film’s idea came from in an interview on the Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast earlier in the year.

Bradley Cooper is directing a new film featuring Will Arnett and Laura Dern. The movie centers around a couple whose relationship falls apart, and follows Will Arnett’s character as he finds a new passion for stand-up comedy.

This movie is inspired by the life of John Bishop, and I’m certain of it! Apparently, Will and John were seated together at a dinner about ten years ago, and Will was really impressed by John’s story. He thought it would make a great movie, and I’ve just finished working on it.

Okay, so I just heard about this new movie, *Is This Thing On?*, and it premiered at the New York Film Festival recently. The reviews are *amazing* – it’s sitting at a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes! Seriously, that’s almost perfect, which is super exciting. I’m definitely gonna check it out!

According to Collider, it might take a little while to connect with the film *Is This Thing On?*, but once Alex, played by Arnett, starts performing, it becomes a truly unforgettable and touching movie – one of the best you’ll see this year.

According to *Variety*, the movie is observant, touching, and enjoyable to watch, though it occasionally feels a little too eager to please the audience.

I was really surprised by this show! It doesn’t grab you right away, but it slowly gets under your skin. What really makes it special is how real and honest it feels, and that’s thanks to the amazing performances from Will Arnett and Laura Dern – they’re both so natural and believable, it’s fantastic, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

According to *Slant Magazine*, the film is a well-observed and pleasant work, sharing some of the artistic struggles seen in other Bradley Cooper movies, but it doesn’t feel the need to prove its main character is a genius.
