Brad Pitt’s F1 Speeds Past All of Apple’s Other Movies

Beating every prior blockbuster release by Apple, it appears that F1: The Movie is poised to become the studio’s most successful film yet. This unexpected triumph is remarkable given Apple’s recent history of underperforming at the box office.

Apple’s movie “F1” has earned an impressive $293 million in its first ten days, surpassing its production budget of $250 million. However, it’s important to note that if we factor in the $100 million spent on marketing, the film is still operating at a loss. Nonetheless, this success boosts Apple Studio’s performance record; with five films released so far, only “F1” and two others come close to achieving such box office success. “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon” earned $158 million and $221 million respectively during their run, while “Fly Me to the Moon” and “Argylle” were commercial disappointments, grossing only $42 million and $96 million.

It seems that Apple’s ambition to produce more expensive films is reinforced, if anything, by the release of F1. Although the film Napoleon was a significant gamble with a reported budget of $200 million, it failed to recoup its costs. As for F1, we’ll have to wait and see if it can sustain momentum after the release of Superman and the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Fortunately, audiences and critics alike are appreciating F1, praising its simple narrative and exhilarating action scenes. Moreover, for an optimal viewing experience, it’s best to catch F1 on the grandest screens; IMAX theaters have accounted for 20.4% ($60 million) of the film’s total global revenue so far.

F1 Boasts Impressive Action Scenes, Just Like Top Gun: Maverick

The movie F1 shares similar narrative beats and visual style with Top Gun: Maverick, a blockbuster that grossed approximately $1.5 billion against its $177 million budget. However, the financial success of F1 might not reach those heights. Brad Pitt, who stars in F1, acknowledged the competition but remains unperturbed. Viewers who’ve watched the film were pleasantly surprised as both Pitt and his co-star Damson Idris performed their own racing stunts, enhancing the realism of the scenes. The film also authentically portrayed the excitement of the sport by adhering to its scientific principles.

During the 2023 racing season, some portions of F1 were captured. Pitt shared that it was a profoundly humbling experience. A significant number of those scenes were filmed over race weekends and ongoing events. “We stood on sacred turf,” he said. “It was incredibly humbling to immerse ourselves in a sport that commands such reverence and is treated like a religion. Our aim was to avoid disturbing anyone as we told our story, while they continued with their crucial tasks.

Jerry Bruckheimer found it extraordinary to witness Pitt and Idris Elba on the racetrack, standing alongside actual Formula 1 drivers. He stated, “When there’s a massive audience watching our actors and our vehicles lined up with all of the incredible drivers and teams of F1, it gives you goosebumps.” He further added, “It was truly something unique.” Director Joseph Kosinski has since expressed interest in having Tom Cruise join the sequel, in a thrilling role.

F1: The Movie is showing in theaters.
