After shutting down servers in 2022, Heroes of Newerth returns as HoN: Reborn.

Way back in 2005, I found myself part of an exciting journey – the creation of a new multiplayer online battle arena game, echoing the footsteps of Defense of the Ancients (DotA). The genre was still finding its feet and had a dedicated yet niche fanbase. As DotA’s player base expanded, so did their curiosity about other games in this genre. That’s when the tale of Heroes of Newerth (HoN) began for me.

2009 marked the beginning of Heroes of Newerth’s (HoN) closed beta phase, generating immense anticipation prior to its pre-launch. Subsequent to this, an open beta was initiated followed by its official debut in the following year. This title, originating from the renowned Warcraft 3 mod DotA, was exceptionally well-received. Over time, HoN’s developers made several significant changes, transforming it into a free-to-play game, enhancing graphics, refining gameplay, and overall improving its gaming experience.

Unfortunately, despite all the hard work and persistent attempts to keep it going, Frostburn Studios closed the Heroes of Newerth servers on June 20, 2022. However, on January 28, 2025, a formal announcement was made, bringing good news that Heroes of Newerth would be reborn as Heroes of Newerth: Reborn.

Heroes of Newerth: Reborn rises from the ashes

As stated on the official Heroes of Newerth (HoN) site, Reborn is set to be an updated adaptation of the original game. This revamp aims to evoke a sense of nostalgia among long-time players, all the while enhancing the experience for newcomers, without altering the core essence of the game.

Following decades of community backing and the unwavering enthusiasm of a devoted fanbase, we’re thrilled beyond belief to resurrect Heroes of Newerth! This isn’t simply a reboot, but a fresh take on what the game could embody in today’s competitive gaming landscape. We’ve poured our efforts into updating every aspect, from graphics to network functionality, to offer an exceptional gaming experience for both seasoned players and new recruits.

The comeback of HoN is due to a partnership between Kongor Studios and Garena, with the game set to debut as a free-to-play title on the iGames platform. Key elements in HoN: Reborn include:

Previews suggest that the updated game is visually impressive, but it’s uncertain if it will hold its own against heavyweights like Dota 2, League of Legends, and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang in the MOBA scene.
