Box office: ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ continues strong box office run during second weekend
As a lifelong cinema enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of superhero films since the dawn of time (or at least since the 80’s), I must say that Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” is nothing short of a marvel itself! I remember when the first Deadpool movie broke records, and now this sequel is taking it to another level. It’s like they’ve found the secret formula for box office domination!
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement over Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” continuing its reign at the box office. In just its second weekend, this action-packed duo raked in an impressive $97 million! Trailing only behind “Inside Out 2”, it solidifies its position as the second-biggest movie of the year so far. The thrill is real, folks!
In its debut weekend, the sequel of the adult-rated comic book series, featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, set a new domestic box office record, earning approximately $205 million, as per Comscore’s calculations.
As a cinephile, I found myself marveling at the impressive box office performance of the recent film I watched. It managed to secure the eighth position among the most successful sophomore weekends for domestic releases, surpassing last summer’s blockbuster sensation “Barbie” which grossed an astonishing $93 million in its second weekend, as reported by Variety.
In a period where there’s been some apprehension about superhero movie saturation, “Deadpool & Wolverine” has provided a refreshing boost to the genre, earning an impressive $395 million within U.S. borders, surpassing the initial two “Deadpool” films. It is anticipated to breach the $1 billion mark in just a few more days. The sequel to “Inside Out” has already generated over $1.55 billion globally, following its eighth weekend in cinemas.
In its third week, “Twisters,” Universal’s modern take on the 1996 hit movie, featuring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos, earned the second position domestically with a box office collection of $22 million. To date, it has amassed a total of $195 million.
In a surprising move, M. Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller “Trap” debuted in third position at the box office, raking in $15 million. On the other hand, Sony’s adaptation of the beloved children’s book “Harold and the Purple Crayon” garnered a less-than-expected $6 million, landing in sixth place.
Over the weekend, Walt Disney Studios surpassed $3 billion in worldwide box office sales for the year, making it the first studio to achieve this milestone. This impressive feat is attributed to the anticipated releases of “Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” and “The First Omen” in 2024.
In summary, this year’s box office saw its highest weekly earnings yet, totaling approximately $418 million. According to Comscore’s analysis, July’s domestic sales reached an impressive $1.2 billion, marking the first month to surpass the billion-dollar threshold since July 2023.
