‘Bouncing back’: James Van Der Beek shows off some varsity moves amid cancer battle

There goes West Canaan High School’s hero.

James Van Der Beek, known for his role in “Varsity Blues,” recently shared a video on Instagram showing him throwing a football, even while undergoing treatment for cancer. His wife, Kimberly, left a supportive comment on the post.

She playfully commented, ‘You’re a Wizard. Bouncing back baby!!’ with three heart-eyes emojis. This came after actor Van Der Beek shared last year that he was diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer.

I was just rewatching a clip and noticed Jonathan Van Der Beek sporting a white football jersey – number 4, with ‘Moxon’ on the back. That brought me back! He played the backup quarterback, Jonathan ‘Mox’ Moxon, in that fun coming-of-age movie set in Texas from 1999.

James Van Der Beek unfortunately can’t attend the live ‘Dawson’s Creek’ reunion because he’s sick, but he’s arranged for a very talented replacement: Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Van Der Beek shared a video of his favorite football jersey, recalling fond memories of playing and loving his team’s uniform. He’s now offering fans a limited number of commemorative jerseys – with or without his signature – just like he did last year. All the money raised will go to support families battling cancer, as detailed on his website.

Van Der Beek expressed his gratitude to his fans for all the support they’ve sent him since he revealed his diagnosis.

I was incredibly touched by the amazing response to last year’s Blues jersey,” he shared. “Your support has meant the world to me, and I’m so grateful. Thank you for all the love, prayers, and encouragement – you’ve made this jersey represent something truly special, much bigger than just a movie. I’m endlessly thankful for each and every one of you.”

Earlier this month, the actor best known for “Dawson’s Creek” announced he’s auctioning off items from his personal collection to help cover the costs of his cancer treatment.
