The creators of the upcoming Blue Bloods spin-off, Boston Blue, have shared some details about Jack Reagan, Danny Reagan’s (Donnie Wahlberg) son.
The latest episode of Boston Blue shares what’s been happening with Jack, Tony Terraciano’s character from Blue Bloods. Although he hasn’t appeared on screen in the spinoff yet, viewers learn that Danny’s son is now working with Doctors Without Borders, stationed in Africa.
Brandon Sonnier, a co-creator of the show, recently told TVLine why Jack was mentioned in the episode. He explained it wasn’t a last-minute addition, but a purposeful choice. They wanted viewers to remember that Danny had another child and also to show fans of the original series that Jack hasn’t been forgotten. Sonnier also said they aim to keep the character an important part of the overall story.
He explained his decision to set Jack’s location in Africa, rather than closer to home, stemmed from a key part of the Boston Blue storyline: the connection between Danny and Sean (played by Mika Amonsen). He didn’t want Mark Wahlberg’s character appearing to favor his own children, so keeping Jack distant allowed the focus to remain on Danny and Sean’s relationship.
We make a point of knowing what other family members are up to in the “Blue Bloods” world, since our show builds on that foundation. It’s important to the story that Jack is studying medicine abroad.
It’s important to remember Danny has two sons. We placed Jack far away partly for practical reasons – it allows Danny to concentrate on Sean, as he can’t really help Jack from a distance. Jack is doing very well, actually. This family is committed to serving others, and this move felt like a way for Jack to fulfill that commitment, while also serving the needs of the story we’re telling – at least for now.
Brandon Margolis, co-creator of the show, said there are currently no plans for Jack to appear in Boston Blue. However, he hasn’t ruled out the possibility entirely, stating that Jack could return if it fits with future storylines. Margolis also confirmed that we’ll see more members of the Reagan family guest star in the spinoff.
Later in the season, you’ll see more members of the Reagan family. It won’t be Jack, though. We like the idea of bringing him back, but only if it fits the story naturally. We’re always open to seeing other Reagans or elements from the broader universe appear in our Boston-based show.
Sonnier explained that the show’s creators want to first fully introduce Lena Silver’s family, the Silvers (played by Sonequa Martin-Green), before adding new characters. He also hinted that viewers will see some previously unseen members of the Reagan family in future episodes, but didn’t want to reveal any specific details.
Initially, we focused on introducing the Silvers. However, after the recent midseason finale, we’re now integrating the Reagans into the broader Silver family. We’re not ready to reveal which Reagans will appear, but expect to see more – including some new faces. We’re also eager to delve into other parts of the family history.
You can now watch the first half of season one of Boston Blue on Paramount+. The show will be back with new episodes in February 2026.
