The new show, Boston Blue, brought some members of the Reagan family back to CBS, similar to Blue Bloods. However, it didn’t quite recreate the tradition of family dinners. Donnie Wahlberg returned as Danny, and while there were a few guest appearances from Blue Bloods actors, the shows were largely independent. That will change in season two of Boston Blue, with plans for more connections to the original series and the promise of heartwarming reunions.
The new show cleverly brought Danny back without requiring the entire Reagan family to be involved. Although he initially came to Boston because of his son’s health scare, he quickly adjusted to life there. He and Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) formed a strong working relationship, and he was warmly included in the Silver family’s meals, filling a void he felt from being away from his family in New York.
The first episode of the new show went well enough to allow Danny to move to Boston, even though the character of Sean Reagan was played by a different actor. While Andrew Terraciano originally played Sean on Blue Bloods, Mika Amonsen took on the role for the spinoff. To help viewers adjust to the new version of Danny in Boston Blue, the premiere included appearances from some popular characters from Blue Bloods.
Despite the cancellation of the original show, several actors from Blue Bloods seem to be putting any hard feelings aside and joining Donnie Wahlberg on his new series, Boston Blue. With season 2 scheduled to air as part of CBS’s fall 2026 lineup, we can expect even more familiar faces to appear.
Blue Bloods Character Cameos Will Only Get Better In Boston Blue Season 2
So far, four actors from Blue Bloods have appeared on Donnie Wahlberg’s new show, Boston Blue. Marisa Ramirez played her character, Baez, in five episodes of the first season. Danny also had scenes with Erin (Bridget Moynahan), Henry (Lou Cariou), and Joe Hill (Will Hochman) later in the season. According to co-showrunners Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier, Blue Bloods fans will have even more to look forward to in season two. Margolis hinted to TVLine that…
Honestly, we want to see everyone here! We’re always working to get as many people involved as possible. Right now, we’re especially focused on inviting those who haven’t had a chance to visit Boston this season – it’s a big priority for us, and we’re making it happen.
As a big fan of Boston Blue, I was thrilled to hear it got picked up for a second season so quickly! It’s clear the show’s creators realized that having actors from Blue Bloods make appearances didn’t hurt the new show’s own stories at all. So far, only Marisa Ramirez is confirmed to be back as Baez – Mark Wahlberg let that slip – but we’re already hearing about some fun cameos coming up. Sonnier shared some details about those, and…
And here’s some exciting news: we’ve invited new people to be on the show, and some who haven’t appeared before have already said yes!
We’re still waiting to hear which former Blue Bloods actors will be in season 2 of Boston Blue. If CBS follows its usual pattern, the new season will probably premiere on Friday nights around mid-October. While Baez is confirmed to return, with most of the Reagan family together in New York City, the possibilities for the season are endless.
Which Blue Bloods Characters Make Sense To Appear In Boston Blue Season 2
It’s easiest to predict which characters from the original series will appear in the second season – especially those who were already in season one. Erin Reagan visited for a couple of episodes of Boston Blue, and Maria Baez currently has the most guest appearances on the spinoff of any actor from Blue Bloods. Bringing back Henry and Joe might be more challenging than featuring Erin and Baez again.
Fans of Blue Bloods are hoping to see Tom Selleck reprise his role, but it might be challenging. Selleck had largely stepped away from acting after the show ended, and he’d previously expressed wanting it to continue. However, he hinted at a possible return to acting around late 2025. Donnie Wahlberg suggested a storyline where Frank Reagan travels to Boston or his son Danny visits him in New York. The new spin-off series established that Frank is still the NYPD commissioner, a demanding job that could limit his ability to travel and visit.
Many members of the Reagan family were still living at the end of Blue Bloods, which opens up possibilities for characters to appear on Boston Blue. Jamie and Eddie might face challenges as new parents. Bringing back Jackie Curatola would be a welcome addition, and Jennifer Esposito was a fan favorite. It would also be interesting to see how Danny’s current partner interacts with his former partner, Baez, and how their dynamics compare to Jackie’s potential role in Boston.
One of the simplest ways to bring characters from Blue Bloods onto Boston Blue would be to have Danny visit his family in New York City. It’s hard to create believable reasons for characters to travel so far from their everyday lives and jobs. Having Danny in New York also opens the door to bringing back former cast members – a brief cameo feels like a smaller ask than a full guest appearance.
Okay, so Boston Blue is taking a break for the summer, but if you’re already missing it – like I am! – you can always rewatch episodes of Blue Bloods on Paramount+. It’s a great way to get hyped for season 2 and maybe even start thinking about which characters you’re really hoping to see more of.
