The popular ABC police drama, The Rookie, will return for a ninth season. Starring Nathan Fillion, the show has proven to be a big success with audiences and is now ABC’s third-longest-running drama series.
The show Grey’s Anatomy has been on television the longest, and is starting its 23rd season. NYPD Blue comes in second, having lasted for 12 seasons.
In an interview with Deadline, The Rookie creator Alexi Hawley expressed his hope that the show will run for as many seasons as Grey’s Anatomy. This aligns with what star Melissa O’Neil has also said about wanting a long run for the series.

According to Hawley, the general approach everyone is taking, as Melissa O’Neil put it, is to handle the situation with the same dramatic flair as the TV show Grey’s Anatomy.
Everyone seems to be really enjoying themselves – the cast genuinely likes each other and loves coming to work, and they get to do exciting things daily. As we start Season 9, we definitely still have plenty of fresh ideas.

Hawley explained that the show isn’t a typical crime procedural, meaning they don’t need to invent a new murder mystery each week.
As a gamer, I love that this game feels like it can constantly evolve. It’s awesome because it never feels like the story is going to end. Every time a new character joins the team, it shakes things up and opens up new possibilities. Honestly, I could play this forever – I’d keep going as long as the servers are up!

In the TV show The Rookie, Nathan Fillion plays John Nolan, a forty-year-old from Pennsylvania who starts a new career as a police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department after going through a divorce.
John joined the Los Angeles police force as their oldest rookie and quickly discovered that real police work was much more challenging and dangerous than he expected, despite his strong will and dedication.
In addition to Nathan Fillion and Melissa O’Neil, the cast of The Rookie includes Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Titus Makin Jr., and Mercedes Mason.
The Rookie airs on ABC in the US, in the UK, seasons 1-8 are streaming on NOW.
